Description Here's an artwork for you! This is between commissions, I'm still not free enough for regular uploads. Well, it's been a while since I've done any medieval artworks -- I'm trying to achieve something that of an ambush... um, did it work? xD

What a great strong atmosphere, your highlights and Lightning are so well done, the rain and Raven give it the rest, its a really cool picture. Didnt notice it at all the first time but saw it randomly in group and my mouth went open. Good job man!

I'm glad that you think so
Yes, it was inspired by the lyrics by Grandson's song, "Blood // water".

I made this piece a long time ago, so I'm really surprised that someone actually realized that... you're amazing haha xD

It's a great picture. The atmosphere is good and I like the 'ambushers' placement as far as not revealing too much but just enough. The crows wings are especially well done and overall the rain effect is well done...possibly the far foreground/near background(?) area where the incoming troop reflections are is too bright.

My most critical comment has mostly to do with your description of the scene. If it's an ambush it seems like the incoming troops aren't in any grave danger from the particular ambush technique because they do not appear to be in danger of being hemmed in either behind or on the sides. It also seems as if the advancing troops are prepared for an imminent battle.
If anything, and what I thought before I read your description, I saw the ambushers as cowering in fear and hopes of surviving the overwhelming force coming at them...indeed the ambushers seem the ones hemmed in.

So if I rate this on the quality of the picture and the feeling it conveys absent your description I rate it very highly. If I rate it as a reflection of what you were attempting to portray, it's more difficult...but then again all art is an interpretation. Regardless it's something beyond my highest capabilities to produce so I'm impressed either way.

The sensation of surprise works pretty well.
First I think some soldiers, maybe deserters, are hidden behind a great tree, but the one who face us look quite calm, not terrified or upset so it's not a runner...
Then i saw the spear of hidden soldiers in the tranchey, hidden to the Saxons and even to the spectator. It's a great idea: just one soldier facing the spectator, all the other one are suggested by their weapons.
The entire scene is great, fucking ambiance, we could anticipate the slaughter, blood and guts in the mud!
You deserve some very enthusiast congratulations!

When I first saw the soldiers, I immediately thought of the 1066 AD battles: Battle of Stamford Bridge and the Battle of Fulford. The men on the left could represent the English; the shield wall of the much larger army likely would be the Vikings if it were Stamford Bridge. Otherwise, the Army in the background would be the English Huscarls, the men in the front Viking Varangians.
The crows are a nice touch; both ravens and crows are well known to eat dead bodies after the vultures/ buzzards have had their fill. The reflection in the puddles looks a bit like William the Conquerer's battle standard: A Jew's cross with a dot in each quadrant. The men behind the shield wall could be mounted, but because of the trees it kinda ruins the "Battle of Hastings" feel (even though Hastings was the most pivotal battle in English history).
I noticed a subtle Fleur-de-Lis on the shield on the right; traditionally a French symbol. This would make sense: up until around 1300, the European kingdoms only cut down the most massive trees for their cathedrals and castles (Chartres Cathedral is a good example). The various 200 or so kingdoms generally warred with each other constantly.
This could also be a representation of the Hundred Years War, the longest single conflict in history. Again we have the English and the French squaring off because that's what they do.
The rain and darkness provide an ominous feel to the piece, but the light on the men in the back could be a minute hint on who is going to win this skirmish. The Rain splash on the trees is well made, though not perfect, as rain splash actually goes up, no matter the angle the drop hits a surface at.
This is pretty unique. Most battles in the Middle Ages are depicted as conflicts where there was no rain, no clouds. However, battles did indeed happen in every kind of weather, though snow and medicanes( hurricanes/ tropical storms that come out of the Mediterranean were far less common conditions.

IMO, the seeming victims look numerous enough to overwhelm those lying in wait. Ambush? No. They're not setting a trap; they're hiding, hoping a numerically superior enemy will pass without seeing them.

Of course, those comments do not detract one iota from your superb execution. This is a terrific piece of military art.

Amazing battle scene, it looks so real and in the same way artistic.

You really nailed a brutal and cold atmosphere here.
