Description A thousand years before the Great War, Midden was united, and each country was divided into small provinces, each ruled by a senator. As the tale goes, Arcamia was a young Hikki studying to be a Provincial Senator on Midden's Territorial Court and during a heated debate, Arcamia spoke out, defying the law of the court since she was but an apprentice. She had spoken out on the grounds that the senator debating was incompotent, and that she was smarter than he was. She was sentenced to be punished by her senator, a Vulpesant named Bo'Ruur. Bo'Ruur was a strict man, and it dishonored him to have one of his students behave in such a way. Bo'Ruur ordered her before him, and told her to prove her intelligence by asking her three riddles. If she failed at any of the three riddles, she would loose her tail. It was effectively a death sentence, which no one would oppose. (Halving was a common excecution technique in Midden's early years.) The first riddle was as follows:

Bo'Ruur: "I was riding on a ship to Veejan, when I passed six fishing boats. Each boat had five sialors, and each sailor had two maidens. How many people were sailing to Veejan?"
Arcamia thought just for a moment, and then replied: "One, sir. And that would be you."

She had anwered the first riddle correctly, but there were still two more.
The next riddle was posed as a question:

Bo'Ruur: "You feed it and it lives, you water it and it dies. What is it?"
Now this one was difficult, because Arcamia knew of a few plants that could only be watered once a year, any more and they would die. But that thought cleared her mind as she replied: "Fire!"

The third riddle was the only one standing in the way of the rest of her life, and little did she know, but it held greater meaning than expected.

Bo'Ruur: "The man who makes it does not want it, the man who buys it will not use it, but the one who uses it does not know it. What is it?"
Arcamia stopped, and thought. A single tear rolled down her cheek, as she concluded that there were two answers to this question, and either could be right, and either could be wrong. Looking up at Bo'Ruur, she replied: "A grave?"

She went on to be one of the most influential senators Midden had seen in an eon.

Cool riddles! I only got the first one though.
What was the second option for the third?

It could either be a grave or a coffin.

Poor-Judgment [2006-03-06 21:54:52 +0000 UTC]

What a strange story. I'm glad it worked out for her.

I like the plump rounded shape of her body as well as the expression of distress on her face. "My Tail?" Another fine addition to the gallery.

Glad you think so man!
It's not often enough that my chars are reffered to as "plump", especially in a good way.

JazzLizard In reply to Alliaero [2006-03-06 17:23:36 +0000 UTC]

Then you would have lost your tail!
The excecution method of "halving" involved a massive weighted blade on the end of a long arm. The subject of excecution was placed under the blade, which was lifted a man's height off the ground. Then, after their final rights were read the blade was dropped, cutting the individual in half.

Well, insubordinate apprentices were usually dealt with very severly, the severity of their punishment depended on their trade, and their offense.

JazzLizard In reply to dramaticirony [2006-03-09 13:47:29 +0000 UTC]

Well, It was kind of one of those common sense things, and she had been told when she began her apprenticeship not to speak out of turn.

If you say so, It was your country that would behead people for not nodding to the king or queen when they passed.

dramaticirony In reply to JazzLizard [2006-03-10 16:12:34 +0000 UTC]

Which was harsher, you can't judge a person by the actions of their country, especially not ones that long ago. I think you'll find Britain has changed a considerable amount since then. Besdies that was long before I was born.

JazzLizard In reply to dramaticirony [2006-03-10 16:37:53 +0000 UTC]

Lol, I know, I know, I wan't saying it was you who did the beheading, I was just comparing your country's history to that of Midden's past.

Interesting riddles ! I really like this story. It reminds me of the scene in MirrorMask when one of the sphinxes asked Helena a riddle. She distracted it, and then asked it a riddle..."What hangs on a wall and whistles ?"
The answer was a herring. She threw in the whistling bit as to not make it too obvious.

A herring?
...
I get it not.

A herring hangs on the wall. The whistling part was so not to make it obvious.

I actually came up with the picture before the story, and I was thinking of having it where a giant wanted to eat her tail if she couldn't answer his riddles, but that would just be silly!
