Here you go. A comic explaining both the origins of Luna's Royal guards and relieving Spike of his worries.I assume with the multitude of ways spike has grown, dragons can grow to any number of sizes and shapes in adulthood based on life choices.

Just out of curiosity, does "language" mean any language at all or the creature's language? (No offense, but for all we know, Spike could possibly be a monolingual Anglophone, with Rarity knowing multiple languages.)

That would make a lot of sense, considering that bat ponies arenβt even really a species, the only bat pony what flutter shy and that was the result of a failed expirement, so the guards would have to be something else

I decided to look up the guards on the Wiki, and I found this:
In the chapter book Princess Luna and the Festival of the Winter Moon , Luna's guards are given the names Echo and Nocturn. The novel also confirms Larson and Faust's statements of her guards being a different "race of ponies that lived deep within mountain caves like bats."
Maybe the guards are actually part of a race of dragon/pony hybrids, and they live in the caves because their dragon parents are more comfortable there (plus the guards are probably self-conscious about looking dragon-like, since they're most-likely not that common).
