Another Nineteen-Ninety-Something that left some of my readers a-scratchin' their heads, but take it from me, your friendly neighborhood '90s geek - this absolutely 100% happened. As always whenever there's some hip new trend that the youth of today can't stop talking about, clueless people in ties want to know what the hell is going on. So in November 1992, one hapless New York Times reporter called up Megan Jasper, a former employee of Sub Pop Records, for all the inside nitty-gritty about this swingin' new grunge scene comin' out of Seattle - the culture, the music, the clothes, and of course the slang. There's gotta be slang, right?

Turns out there was not. But there's no reason the rest of the world needed to know that. Jasper made up a litany of nonsense words and phrases on the spot, affirming that yeah, sure, this is totally how the grunge kids talk. And the media bought it hook, line, and sinker, proving once again that journalistic integrity is alive and well in this nation. This is absolutely the sort of thing Tina would fall for too. Normally Joel loves making authority figures look stupid, but it hits different when it's closer to home.
