Description Here's a commission from fellow MSTie , who remembers my long-defunct "B-Movie Babes" series and wanted to see me revive it briefly to cover the ladies of MST3K's short subjects. And hey, I love MST3K, I love drawing beautiful women - why not? From left to right:

- Nuveena, from "Design for Dreaming" (shown with 524 "12 to the Moon"), the dancer of the future who finds herself mesmerized by the cars on display at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel's auto show. Sleeps in the nicest oxygen tent you've ever seen.
- Mr. B Natural, from "Mr. B Natural" (shown with 319 "War of the Colossal Beast"). An androgynous man-woman who prances around like a ninny while preaching the values of "the spirit of music". Knew your father, she did. Okay, clearly the short tries to pass her off as a guy, but as Kevin Murphy said in the Amazing Colossal Episode Guide, "A boy with great legs and boobs is just plain wrong."
- The showgirl from "The Selling Wizard" (shown with 603 "The Dead Talk Back"). Or, as Tom Servo lovingly identified her, "the pizza dominatrix". Says nary a word as she leads us through the wild wonderful world of ice cream freezers, courtesy of Anhauser-Busch in the days before they only made beer.
- Whitey the angel from "Out Of This World" (shown with 618 "High School Big Shot"). While vying with Red the devil for the soul of a bread salesman, she transports herself down to Earth in the guise of a news reporter to learn all she can about the fascinating world of specialty bread. Apparently, all you need to succeed in the profession is a hat and a sketchpad.

Great stuff. Really captures each character-although they're all sexy and psychotic.

Crazy Short ladies!! Um, ladies? . . . um . . . Ladies. Well. Mr B Natural is a lady, dangit. I officially adore this picture.
And I think Bridget and Mike were married before Mike started working on MST3K

Wow; I just watched "Mr. B's Lost Shorts" yesterday. Coincidence...or fate?!

And unfortunately, I've only seen the first two. Your designs are great; don't get me wrong. Fantastic job.

The weird thing is I never wanted to buy a single product any of these shorts were shilling (those that I could follow. What precisely was Design for Dreaming selling? Cars? Clothes? Anti-hallucinogenic barbiturates?).

I think it was selling automatic cake frosters.

It's good to see you doing some MST stuff again.
Your description of "Mr." B Natural cracked me up:
An androgynous man-woman who prances around like a ninny while preaching the values of "the spirit of music".
That's a Best-Brain-worthy line right there!

If I'm not mistaken wasn't Nuveena played by Mike Nelson's real-life wife when she "magically" appeared on the Satellite of Love?

Indeed, that was Bridget Jones-Nelson in the host segments, dancing crazily with her husband, although they might still have just been going out at that point - I'm not sure when they got hitched.

According to Mike Nelson's wikipedia page, they got married in 1990.

Woot! This is awesome. A nice tribute to the more obscure (but we still love 'em anyway) babes of MST3K. Heh. Your including Mr. B. Natural as a "babe" amuses me muchly....not only are we flat out admitting she's female (of COURSE) but a babe... (Well, I suppose if she wasn't acting _creepy_, her actual appearance was reasonably attractive.)

Easily my favourite is (takes a deep breath, sings dramatically) NUVEENA, the Magical Singing Dancing Woman of the Future! (stops singing. Gah, that hurts your throat.) Design for Dreaming is easily one of THE trippiest shorts _ever_ on MST3K, and the "sequel" one with Tad Tadlock that I've also seen--I forget the name--is equally psychedelic.

'Course, in my case, I also just like the whole episode that short's from. The movie itself, "Twelve to the Moon", isn't terrible. It's got that combination of sorta interesting (had an international, inter-racial cast but was _before_ Star Trek) with utterly RIDICULOUS (helmets with NO FACE PLATES on the _moon_?!) that makes a quite fun MST3K'd movie. Ha!

Whitey the Angel gets some points, too, though, as "High School Big Shot" is so depressing, it _needed_ something that silly ahead of it. Gah.

"Oscar Wilde only wishes he were that gay"

What on Earth ever made Conn Instruments think "Mr. B Natural" would make an effective advertisement?
I remember all these shorts and all were funny but "Mr. B Natural" stands out as being the most bizarre.

Maxine Mink could have been a B-movie babe!

It was a series that paid tribute to my favorite actresses from movies featured on "Mystery Science Theater 3000". I only drew two installments before I moved on to other projects:

So no, Maxine wouldn't have been featured since she's one of my original characters.

They called her Nuveena in the host segments (where she was played by Bridget Jones), but I don't think it was spoken in the short itself. The actress who played her was Thelma Tadlock, whom I believe was a fairly well-known dancer in the '50s.

It's the same deal as Mary Martin playing Peter Pan, really - a woman playing a sprite-like boy. Unfortunately, in "Mr. B Natural", it just plays as creepy, but it makes for some fine riffing.

"Hey, Whitey!"

"See, Buzz, it's really FUN to be psychotic!"

"This would be the "Up" part of her manic moodswings, I'm guessing..."

Seriously, is it just me or do a lot of MST3K shorts feature really spooky women?

Yawn... these figures are too generic. The faces, mouths, bodies are almost all the same. Combined with the non poses that they're in it is hard to call these charactures. You can do better than this.

Yeah, probably - caricature is still a stumbling block for me. I can never figure out which features to accentuate and which ones to underplay.

Bravo, and nice color for the background too! I'm glad you didn't include the Romulan roomate from Is this Love?, I suggested her because she reminded me of one of my most favorite mean spirited riffs ever. In "Brain that Wouldn't Die" during the beauty contest a bevy of babes walks out, then a contestant shuffles in and Crow yells "obviously someone's sister!". You did a great job as usual with the details and body language. I will be commisioning you to do my christmas cards later this year. I finally got a good screengrab of the manger scene in gypsy's mouth from Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

Mr B. Natural: It's me, that's who! Mr. B Natural! Second note from the left! As natural as you may ever see me!

Crow: Joel, I'm scared...

The Design for Dreaming short was weird too. I also noticed the part with the lady placing the cake in the futuristic oven was used again during an episode of Mythbusters.

"Design for Dreaming" shows up a lot as stock footage - I heard it was used during the opening credits of a movie not too long ago.

Oh yeah! There was something else I saw where they were talking about people of the pasts's vision of (dramatic voice) THE FUTURE!! and they _kept_ showing clips from "Design for Dreaming" all over the place...what was that...

Oh! I remember. It was "How William Shatner Changed the World". I think. Actually a rather funny and halfway informative little "documentary" about how Star Trek technology inspired real-life scientists and some of it is here today, or _more_ advanced than shown on the classic series. Anyway, they kept using little bits of, say, the crowd from "Design for Dreaming" clapping for ironic effect all over the place. Nuveena and Tuxedo Mask--er, the guy from the short--were shown as well, at some point (that's how I pegged what the clapping scenes were from.)

Well, you can kinda see it - her wand is sorta like a whip, she has that furrowed expression going on in that scene, and her vest looks like a tablecloth at an Italian restaurant. It makes me laugh every time just 'cause of how uncanny it is.
