Description
So hey, how 'bout that Sonic the Hedgehog movie, huh? Everybody's breathing sighs of relief with the news that they're redesigning that squirrely blue rat thing they tried to pass off as Sonic, but I remain wary - because even if Sonic ends up looking better, the plot still looks like dull by-the-numbers garbage. Why the heck is Sonic in the real world, riding in cars and hanging out with the guy from Hop? There's over 25 years of established Sonic lore to draw inspiration from, with dozens of supporting characters to flesh out the cast with, and they went the Smurfs route? Really?
I don't get Hollywood's insistence on sucking all the creativity and originality out of established IPs to try and make them "more widely accessible" (read: "we don't understand our audience but we want their money anyway"). If you're gonna make a Sonic movie, just make a damn Sonic movie. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy teaming up to save their island homes from Dr. Robotnik and his wacky army of animal-powered automatons - boom, there you go. How hard is that?

There was an episode of It's Always Sunny recently that touched on this subject. Part of the reason is that the studios want to make a wide enough target audience to combat pirating and illegal downloads that make more cult movies unprofitable.Β

Just another victim of the live-action modern movie adaptation, where it's based on something you loved growing up but 80% of the movie focuses on the main human actor(s) and their dull everyday plot against the evil business man/woman that somehow the beloved texture-realistic cartoon character has to help out with... and then end the movie with "That's what it's all about... the cartoon character you grew up with."
--
I wonder if I could do a role-reversal of this formula: showcase a trailer with beloved cartoon characters in the real world with real life actors... only for people to see that that was only 20% of the movie and the rest of the film is just giving them what they gosh-darn wanted to see from their beloved franchise.

Look, I'm going to get a lot of shit for this, but I liked the original design. I'm always excited to see new takes/designs on existing IP's just to see how they play out. And it's kinda sad they caved to this massive nerdy outcry. Now some poor CG artists are probably working long miserable hours to redesign the whole thing.
And I like Jim Carrey as Robotnik. Ol' Eggman is not a super serious antagonist and Jim fits the bill since he portrays cartoony characters perfectly. He has that enormous energy in his corner.
I dunno. Whatever, it is what it is now. Can't change it.

I will say this, you're the first person I've seen who likes movie!Sonic. But I don't blame the fans for being upset, not in the slightest - if you're a movie studio and you're working with an established IP that's been popular for years, it's important to understand why people like it. A big part of Sonic's appeal is his simple but effective character design, and the one they came up with for the movie feels like they did it just to show off all the fancy things they can simulate in CGI instead of trying to accurately portray the character.
They basically did everything 100% opposite - "He's got big expressive eyes? Make them small. He's got long thin legs? Make them muscular. He's sleek and aerodynamic? Make him lumpy and misshapen so he doesn't silhouette at all." They're going "Look, with our technology, we can make something that's almost human!" And sure, you can, but that doesn't mean you should.
Honestly, they wouldn't have needed to scramble for a redesign like this if they'd taken the time to understand their audience in the first place. This is playing to an audience of geeks, and it's more of the same unsettling Uncanny Valley junk that geeks have been sick of for years. It's the Smurfs, it's Transformers, it's Alvin and the Chipmunks - it's lazy and it's played out. It looked like we were getting away from that in Hollywood for a while with unique films like The Lego Movie and The Peanuts Movie and Captain Underpants, stuff that completely nails the look and feel of its source material... and then we get this, which looks like it dropped in right out of 2006. It feels like a huge step backwards.

They could've done an honest Sonic movie a long time ago.Β
The upcoming movie seems to have little to do with Sonic at all. And I just can't see Jim Carrey as Robotnik.

The idea of Sonic entering the real world has actually been done before in the Sonic X anime, now that I've just been thinking about itΒ Β
The question remains if it'll somehow live up to that though. I kinda hope so, especially considering what 4Kids did to it.

"Why the heck is Sonic in the real world"
Because that's where Sonic lives. Β You do know that in canon proper Sonic lives on Earth and that Mobius is a made up place for the American cartoons and comics, right? Β If the movie has any chance of being good it needs to adapt the actual canon, not the fanon.

It's called Shonen Jump, not Shonen-ai Jump. Stop with the yaoi, people!

Yeah, but you know what I mean. Half the fun of a series like this is the weird exotic locations. Tropical beaches, floating islands, bizarre robotic architecture. Even in the games, whenever they tried to set the action in realistic cities and stuff, it just felt so boring compared to the creative insanity of the Genesis era. That's what I'd love to see them try to capture in a movie.

It's literally just called "Sonic's World" now. They stopped trying to call it Earth or Mobius years ago.

It's still Earth in the games. Β It's only called "Sonic's World" in the non-canon Archie comics.

Even the games did away with Earth, at the very least just never saying a name for the planet at all.

I will admit it . As a deviantart member. Iβm not much of a fan of sonic . (I know right) Iβve played some games and theyβre fun to play for about 20 minutes then I get impatient with the plat forming but seeing this Iβm considering the game series

Yeah, they could at least have Sonic andΒ Eggman from another world, if they are going to appear on Earth. Or, you know, just have them on that other world.

That's one of the reasons I'm glad Shigeru Miyamoto is so heavily involved in the Mario movie; he can let the creative team know if they're missing the point or getting into this trap. How much more accessible can Mario get, he's the second-most recognizable video game character after Pikachu!

I'm hoping you're right. The fact that the Mario movie is going to be animated definitely gives me hope for the future as well, because bright goofy games like this are just one of those things that aren't meant to be done in live-action.

Because apparently Hollywood doesn't understand that people go to the movies to escape reality, even if only for 2 hours.
