Description
A mere three days after my Chuck Jones tribute piece, I find that it's time to commemorate the birthday of another late legend in the entertainment world, the brilliant Jim Henson (1936-1990). For years, I was just a casual fan of Henson's work with the Muppets, but I've recently done some in-depth studying of his career, and the man truly was a creative genius. From mere foam rubber and fabric, he could bring life, wit, and personality. And his ideas were amazingly versatile - it's a far cry from the kid-friendly educational air of "Sesame Street" to the unhinged yet sophisticated showbiz stylings of "The Muppet Show" to the strange and upbeat underground world of "Fraggle Rock"...and, of course, the mystical fantasy of The Dark Crystal. And to think it all started with the goofy antics of "Sam and Friends".I couldn't ignore the lasting effect that Jim Henson has left on popular culture. Here's the man himself, surrounded by many of the excellent characters that he helped bring into our collective consciousness. Of course, he didn't perform them all, but without him, they wouldn't even exist.
(Through an amazing coincidence, September 24 is also the birthday of Steve Whitmire, the Muppeteer who took over the role of Kermit the Frog in 1990 after Henson's untimely death. The rainbow connection is stronger than it lets on...)

The latest TV show was warped and had a wrongness in it.
I stopped watching it halfway through the Jay Leno episode andΒ never turned it on again.
I am NOT surprized it was cancelled.

A very great pic! I'm sure, Jim Henson would love it... but where's Robert (Sesame Street)? Jim gave him his own voice too like Kermit and Rowlf.

Vey cool! Something tells me that Sam's looking at Henson like he's responsible for the chaos that ensues before him, not that I agree with him.

Great picture, I love it! It's very nice and well drawn. I would love to see some Labyrinth in there, though.

But Jim Henson didn't make Labyrinth according to my fansite.

I know THAT, Red.
BTW, I find Labyrinth's Fireys scary. They could give a preschooler nightmares.

Then why does your fansite say he didn't? o.O
And I think the Fireys are actually pretty cool. XD I loved them even when I was younger because I thought they were just the weirdest things.

Very well done. I remember doing a collage of Jim Henson characters when I was about ten years old (it wasn't nearly as good as this of course); with all of the characters that he invented, it was probably difficult to have to leave some of them out. Last December I saw some of his original puppets that the Smithsonian has on display in Washington D.C. It truly is a shame that such a creative and versatile genius, much like Walt Disney, was taken so abruptly before he could offer more.

The cast of Dark Crystal and The Muppet Family [ [link] ]. All we need now is Yoda, Bear, the live-action TMNT, the dog-creature from A Never-ending Story, Waldo from The Jim Henson Hour, and a few later Muppets from Muppets Tonight.
Love the future of the Muppets, since movies, comics, TV re-airings, and promotional appearances are being done "out the baloobius". Karen Prell bringing Red out of the Rock is proof: [link]

Oops. An adendum to my last post: I forgot to have him also throw in Eureeka, Magellan (voiced by the same person behind Bear), Batley, Mr. Knack, and the rest of the cast of obscure Nick-aired puppet series, Eureeka's Castle [ [link] ], since they too were created by The Creature Shop. XD

Jim Henson didn't do the puppets for the dark crystal, though. those were designed by Brian Froud. (A wonderful artist in his own right. He also did the designs for the puppets used in the movie Labyrinth...the one with David bowie as the goblin king.)

TherealRNO In reply to Armed-and-Alto [2011-03-27 19:01:35 +0000 UTC]
Froud did the background designs, nothing more. The puppets themselves were conceived by the Henson Creature Shop.

The initial designs of the puppets were done by Froud. Although yes, they were MADE by the Henson creature shop. I believe I probably phrased my comment poorly before, as I never meant to credit him with MORE then the design of them. But the puppets THEMSELVES were based off of Froud's work. Not just the scenery.
Hackles down please.

No problem. Jim had a lot of connections, from George Lucas (Star Wars & Indian Jones [to which, the author of the actual Indy books on which the movies are based lives in the town of my alma mater]), Craig Bartlett (writer for Rugrats, creator of Hey Arnold, animator for Sesame Street & Pee-Wee's Playhouse, and more), all the various creators of the franchises that starred in Muppet Babies, kid horror writer R.L. Stine and some Viacom executives for Eureeka's Castle, Paul Ruebens as Pee-Wee Herman (who cameoed on Sesame Street), Matt Groening (creator of The Simpsons & Futurama, the former of which cameoed on Sesame Street, probably at the behest of Bartlett aforementioned earlier, as Bartlett is married to Matt's sister, Lisa), Disney in giving the classic Muppets a home and for the creation of Bear in the Big Blue House, et al.

I knew a bit of that, but that's all really interesting! ^^
A family friend named Toby is apprenticed at one of the Muppet workshops, and his father was involved directly in the dark crystal project...probably the only reason I know anything about it. *laughs*
The only reason I said anything was that at the time I saw this picture, (veeeeery late at night,) I felt like making a small mention of it. Not really trying to kick up a big fuss or anything.

I've seen her work, including her Fraggle offspring--Janken (paired off with Scooter as an adult, son of Wembley/Mokey) & the daughters of Boober/Mokey and Gobo/Red--I applaud it. It may be different than what I am used to (particularly Janken's orientation), but I am open-minded and highly throw my support behind her ideas, particularly the one about how the F5 wouldn't depart from each other, even if they create families of their own (hence why all three guys participated in the Midsummer Ritual in the Messin' Around Cave--*snickers*--with Mokey, yet Red wants to just be a parent with Gobo; Not to say she doesn't dislike Boober & Wembley, because she does, but she would just prefer to follow age-old tradition). XD

Yes. The Henson brands would be just the sort of brands to bring together people of different nationalities and beliefs, without misunderstandings and violence breaking loose. That's why we fans can join together in harmony despite our various viewpoints, because even if he is good physically, the spirit of Jim is still present in each and every one of us. XD

God Bless Jim Henson, may he rest in peace, but dude you totally forgot the movie Labyrinth. I get the feeling Mr. Henson had a virtual hayday with that one just because the creatures were so much darker than anything he usually got to work with, and yes he probably felt the same about the Dark Crystal. Yet another tribute to his wide range of capabilities and awesomeness!

It would've been nice to see Cookie Monster, but either way, you did a beautiful job on this pic. This picture made drawing Muppets for me easier. I mean there are lots of other Muppet drawings, but this one helped me the most. Thanks. I actually hope you do more Muppet drawings.
