Description The idea for this came while searching for inspiration for some drawings. I ran across a Lego gallery and found so many incredible creations.

I figured, Why not use these as "models", and I mean that in the same way as you would draw figures from a live model, or how you might go to the zoo to do figure studies of animals.

In all it worked very well for my intentions, I have always suffered from a little lack of creativity. I find it much easier to draw what I see rather than create something from scratch. Exercises like this tend to help with that, and after a few times I find it much easier to create something like this from scratch without a model.

I started with a base sketch to get the proprtions, altered a few elements, and just let my imagination go.
This is the end result.

Your drawing looks amazing. Reminds me of the sketches of robots in the instruction book for a Creator set I bought a long time ago, only this time it was the model that came before the drawing.

Take a look at;

Try to break the object down into primitive shapes (circles & squares or cubes and spheres).

Pick up a few books on anatomy and perspective to help you to better understand how parts function together, and how 3 dimensions distort views.

There is a book on anatomy by Burne Hogarth called Dynamic Anatomy, I like his style because he breaks down very oganic shapes into cube like shapes which are easier to put correctly into perspective.

Also, some of the best advise I can give you is pick up at least one good book on perspective. Learn the techniques of 1, 2 and 3 point perspective if you don't already understand these. I did Architectural illustration (homes for brochures) for a few years and it was all 3 point perspective straight from blueprints, not a lot of creativity but you create a nice 3d image people can understand rather than a very flat view.

Or, Find something you like and copy it.

There is a technique where you break an image into into several smaller squares as if you had laid a grid on top of the image (like graph paper). You could actually draw lines on a photocopy of what you are trying to reproduce. then you draw the same grid on another paper or whatever media you are using and draw the contents of each square.

An example is here

Other than that, lots of practice.
There are TONS of tutorials here on DA, search "tutorial" and try a few for fun.

Thanks, I had good inspiration.
Yeah I think it is one of Izzo's, thanks for reminding me the name, I thought that was who did it but after a couple hours of searching for this image again I couldn't find it and didn't want to give credit to the wrong person.
Izzo's stuff is incredible, and superb for this kind of model.
After going through a gallery of his stuff I actually used the lego designer software to build a modified version of his basic armature, I like to use it for figure reference more than the old "wooden guy", and legos are just too fun.
