Since Mars is so bright and easy to see with the naked eye, we don't know who exactly discovered Mars. Ancient astronomers could see it long before the invention of telescopes. Mars has the tallest mountain (Olympus Mons) in the solar system, three times the size of Mt. Everest. Actually, it is. And the red color is from the iron oxide that is in the soil.
