Description Then Azog laughed, and he lifted up his head to let forth a great yell of triumph; but the cry died in his throat. For he saw that all his host in the valley was in a rout, and the Dwarves went this way and that slaying as they would, and those that could excape from them were flying south. And hard by all the soldiers of his guards lay dead. He turned and fled back towards the Gate.

Up the steps after him leaped a Dwarf with a red axe. It was Dain Ironfoot, Nain's son. Right before the doors he caught Azog, and there he slew him, and hewed off his head. That was held a great feat, for Dain was then only a stripling in the reckoning of the Dwarves. But long life and many battles lay before him, until old but unbowed he fell at last in the War of the Ring. Yet hardy and full of wrath as he was, it is said that when he came down from the Gate he looked grey in the face, as one who has felt great fear.

*********

Third drawing in my "Deeds of the Dwarves" series: Dain Ironfoot as he slays Azog chief of Goblins in the Gate of Moria. This is the last part of the War of the Dwarves and the Goblins.

EDIT: Given the presence of Azog in the recent Hobbit movie, I feel I should explain this. Azog never lived past the battle of Moria. He never killed Thrain, either, though he DID kill Thror, and also Nain, Dain's father. It's Dain Ironfoot who kills him, not Thorin. While I understand, and to some extent even approve, of Peter Jackson's decision regarding him, I still feel the need to explain this.

Dain Ironfoot is a really, really awesome guy, and we'll see more of him. For our purposes here, know that Azog just killed his father, who was in a war to avenge the honor of his great-uncle Thror. Thror is Thorin's grandfather, Durin's heir, and Azog killed him in a particularly humiliating way. THAT got ALL the dwarves mad, and they pretty much hunted down all the goblins they could find. In fact, at the point of this picture, the Dwarves have hunted out ALL the goblins in Moria, but it costs them so many men they leave nearly immediately.

So glad to get this picture out, I've worked on it for what seems like forever. I'm not completely happy with it, but, eh, I never am. Anyway, people seemed to like that last one pretty well.

Oh, someone pointed out that goblins and orcs have black blood, not red. This is true. However, it didn't occur to me in the Thorin picture, and here... well, between the night sky, the black clouds, the dark armor, and the dark doorway, I didn't want to try black blood on top of it.

Cause I wanted something different than the movie, and he's described with a "mane" of fire, so I decided to go with something animalistic.  I also wanted to convey a certain maliciousness here.  The Balrog sees Azog being struck down, could potentially save his minion, turn the tide... but chooses not to.  He's smiling as he watches Azog get cut down.

I have a feeling that Dain will do it in the third movie. Just like reforging of Narsil in LOTR was in the third movie instead of first like in the book.

That's possible. Seems an awfully big kill to give a secondary character who hasn't yet appeared, though. Beorn still seems more likely.

You did a great job of portraying the moment of impact. 10/10!

Oh, I like the whole war, but Dain's moment of glory is amazing. I wonder if he saw the Balrog--his words to Thrain certainly indicated he saw something.

Oh by the way, I'm aiming to draw all of the 13 dwarves at the "Unexpected Party" in "The Hobbit" before all my ideas get mangled with the new movie coming out and all. Tell me what you think of my first sketch. (if it ever comes out)

Hmm. I hadn't particularly planned on it, as there isn't much information on that struggle, but I suppose I could try something. Did you have anything in mind? There aren't really many noted "deeds" in Balin's attempted takeover, though it seems to have been a pretty epic effort.

Ï think a good scene would be at the time when the remainder of Balin's forces are trapped in a dead end and all the goblin horde in their backs. Plenty of opportunity to see more of the Dwarves, as you wanted.

Take the diary that Gandalf and the Fellowship stumbles upon in the mines as a Extra reference. It could give add some perspective. You might want to try the "Tolkien Gateway" (google it) It can (hopefully) give you the Info you'll need.

I'll be putting my own pics on soon. I've taken up drawing on a a large(r) scale lateley.

Best Wishes,
Remy Fox

Hmm. There's an idea. Certainly there are a number of phrases from the book that could work. "Drums in the deep" and "They are coming" sound appropriately ominous.

I'll give it some thought, but it may take a while. Good luck with your own drawings.

I hadn't realized that you had finished this. looks good! I love the coloring.

my only criticism is that the action is a little unclear.

Mmm. The angle makes it a trifle odd, I know. I kept messing up the perspective. I always knew what the action would be, it was just a question of presenting it.

Thanks. I knew I wanted that particular pose, although it doesn't make much sense why Dain would leap like that when he could just slash at the guy's legs. The REALLY hard part to figure out was the perspective.

SHADEofJEREMY In reply to JD-Kloosterman [2011-05-12 00:16:13 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome. It doesn't matter why he'd be leaping that way, that's how you wanted to draw it. And yeah, perspective on a scene like this can be difficult. You pulled it off pretty well though.
