I for one am tired of all these new Sonic characters who are either annoying as fuck, or eye candy for furries and fangirls!
Back in the day Sonic's friends where a bunch of little flicky animals who seemed to always get captured and "roboticized" into badniks by Dr.Robotnik. The blue bird is Flicky, the squirrel is Ricky, the chicken is Cucky, the rabbit is Pocky(yes, his name is indeed Pocky!), the penguin is Pecky, the pig is Picky, and the walrus is called Rocky. Aren't they just adorable?!>w<They haven't really appeared in many recent games except for Sonic 4 and in the stands in the Mario & Sonic Olympics games.
Surprisingly, Flicky had a game way back in the arcades before Sonic ever came to be!O.o In that game you had to run around gathering up little chicks and lead them through the exit avoiding the cats and iguanas. It's pretty fun, you can play it on Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection!
I really like how this turned out. I like the sky and I think this is the best Sonic I've draw yet!

The issue though is that you would still have characters with little to no personality even if the original animal line up was kept until modern times.
Me I like to muck with things and make totally new personalities for all the so called characters of the series.
Like Sonic going to his SatAM personality, hard rocking, a little arrogant but kind and noble.
Amy Rose being turned into a combat soldier with skills in marksmanship and in control of her emotions as opposed to the petulant fan girl she is now. But give her some traits like being smart and trustworthy too.
Keep Knuckles the friendly rival, but give him a brain... seriously if you can fall for the plans of someone named EGGMAN in the official continuity you have to have the brain the size of a bloody pea.
Now as for say Rouge, well I would use her as the more female foil for Amy to balance out character traits. Of course she could be made into a noble soldier and ally but use her more feminine traits to lure in the enemy into a false sense of security and bam! you know like the classic femme fatal.
For Tails, well actually he is the only one I would not change too much in terms of personality, just make him grow up a little already.
And as for Robotnik...
Make him his SatAM personality again for petes sake, give him back the ability to enslave people into robots and make him merciless and cruel.
I really miss the SatAM era Robotnik.

I prefer the Genesis games canon because it's more goofy and light hearted and it doesn't take itself too seriousley.

Really, I think they should have stopped after Knuckles. (maybe Amy) Because Sonic had what he needed already: A sidekick (Tails) a rival (Knuckles) and a "girl" (Amy). But Sonic Team just didn't stop. IT WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH FOR THEM

Metal Sonic is the only acceptable one in that list, to me. I guess if you included the "Choatix characters" to help Knuckles' story. But they really did go overboard. In fact, I wouldn't have really minded Shadow even if he wasn't so overused.

I know it's his original Japanese name or whatever, but it's just weird how Sega of America decided to change in the middle of the series.

IIRC Sega of Japan wanted to give him a universal name as part of their plan of giving the games a universal story (unlike how when Sega of America made their own canon for Sonic).

Well, in America he was called Robotnik way before SatAM when they made him more menacing and evil.
