Taking place in Kirby's Adventure/Nightmare in Dream Land, King Dedede notices something odd in the Fountain of Dreams. Nightmares had invaded the Fountain of Dreamsand were going to consume Dream Land in nightmares. King Dedede then takes the Star Rod which stands on top of the fountain, and breaks it into 7 pieces to prevent the nightmares from being released from the fountain. He then gives each piece to each of the of the other 6 bosses Paint Roller, Heavy Mole, Mr.Shine and Mr.Bright, Kracko, Meta Knight, and Whispy Woods who's not shown in this picture since he's a tree and he just stays there in his forest. King Dedede then jumps into the Fountain of Dreams to make sure the nightmares don't find another way out.Kirby characters © Nintendo/HAL Laboratory

So that's the reason why Dedede doesn't let Kirby put the star-rod on the fountain. He doesn't want Nightmare to escape.

I think it's because Meta Knight thinks Kirby has a chance destroying Nightmare, but yet he wants to be proved to be the strongest.

I remember that game: Nightmare in Dreamland. I remember the commercials and beating it on my GBA. Yeah, it is quite a plot twist that the "bad" King is actually trying to protect Dreamland from these Nightmares.
