Description
Edit2: I will do this edit for those that insist on picking on the title I originally chose for this guide.I would love to educate on each wolf and non-wolf species, however that wasn't the point of this guide - I think many people are getting the wrong idea. I was hoping to entice some away from wolves, and hopefully help some correct anatomy mistakes they may make without even knowing they do so. Please do not take this as a tutorial on just wolves, because it clearly is not.
I take no responsibility for what happens after the viewing of this guide. I encourage viewers to research the species you are about to draw further than this little picture guide.
Aaaaand the wolf(and other!) guide I said I was going to do.
I hope to God that I got those breeds right or I'm going feel like such an idiot. Weirdly I know way more about individual dog breeds than I do about wolf breeds sooo yea. I didn't add the fox as a dog-like species since theres so many varied breeds within them. I know I'm missing a ton, but these are the main ones people tend to draw.
Jackel was added pretty much for my own use.
Now back to working on Marked/KC
[Edit]
As said on my dog guide, these images are NOT MINE. If anyone has a problem with these photos, please tell me so I can substitute them

They still have quite a few differences, they're just fairly subtle ^^ I believe the Ethiopian wolf is quite a bit larger in size (jackals are tiny little things..) for example..
Its mexican wolves (or most wolves really) and coyotes that are basicaly the same, aside from DNA.

hey iv got question. iv been creating a char for up to three years now. her name is Timber, at first she was a dire, then grey, now timber wolf. (did ya get the parts with her name an species?) anyways, my char is set in a time somewere in the future so alot of animalshave been mixed or exctint. her fur coloration is white with black dusted patches on the tail, ears, nose, back. normal wolf markings. is that weird? i mena is that possible for a timber wolf to have that kind of coloration? iv seen white and blacks but still...

Jeakilo In reply to girlonwantedposters [2010-07-02 15:55:22 +0000 UTC]
No, it's not weird at all. Especially having a time frame of the distant future; timber wolves can have a variation of "black dusting" - and as far as I know, timber wolves can pretty much be in any color.

You don't have to change them! With these guides I was just trying to persuade people to make characters other than wolves. I adore wolf characters and I am not discouraging them, just incouraging the creation of other canines. There are awesome breeds out there!

ugh, now this gives more motivation for wolf tards to call every canine a wolf.
I swear those sheep from Babe are breeding on this website.

Jeakilo In reply to TheCynicalHound [2010-06-18 03:17:29 +0000 UTC]
I'll be honest, I'm not sure if you're agreeing with the point of my guide, if you're misunderstanding it, or if you are referring to me as one of the sheep.
My point wasn't to encourage them to think of all canines as wolves- this is merely an anatomy reference; I wanted to compare wolves side by side to show the differences, plus the commonly used dog breed species whose anatomy gets mixed up in wolves sometimes, and maybe spark some curiosity that dog breeds besides huskies/shepherds/etc are cool too.

TheCynicalHound In reply to Jeakilo [2010-06-18 03:47:27 +0000 UTC]
yeah but it is rather dumb to refer to all of them as wolves, it seriously reminds me of the sheep from the movie Babe. Maned wolves themselves are more related to foxes. Why not properly name this a canid guide rather than a wolf guide?

Jeakilo In reply to TheCynicalHound [2010-06-18 03:57:04 +0000 UTC]
Oh, so you were stuck on the title I gave this guide.
Because quite honestly, no one would pay attention to a "canid guide". There is a reason I put "and other!" next to the title. If I want to draw the wolf artists in, why title it something they aren't going to pay attention to?
By titling it "wolf guide" they are inticed to thinking it is an entire wolf tutorial, instead of only 1/3 of it being wolves, hence unknowingly exposing them to the others that are not wolves, but commonly mistaken as them.
It is mental trickery. I do know what is and is not a wolf.

TheCynicalHound In reply to Jeakilo [2010-06-18 04:15:21 +0000 UTC]
That is by far.......the silliest reason I have ever heard. Trust me I wanted to use a harsher word there but I am going to resist doing so. Your reason makes no sense and it is a COMPLETELY different story than what you told your other commenters, so which is it? Why should you even care what people would look at? I have seen other CANID guides and people pay attention to those. Trust me, if there is a canine people WILL pay attention regardless. Listen your intention is to EDUCATE people you can't lie or twist facts around about stuff like that because 'people aren't going to look at it.' Again, you are trying to 'help' people not whore yourself out.
If animal planet made a documentary about hyenas should they title it 'Journey of the wolf' because they are afraid people wouldn't pay attention despite that hyenas are in no way a canine? Heck no, the rely on the facts not the fans. If you would have properly titled this Canid board, it would have gave you more creditability and less people questioning you about it. Who gives a rat ass how many people pay attention to it?
Yeah, you do realize that your whole mental trickery is a FAIL on THIS website. You are going to have a bunch of people who don't know any better come to this guide and think dholes and maned wolves are like gray wolves. Yeah sure you expose them to these animals, but you aren't giving them the facts. Also your 'and other' isn't that noticeable, the fact that you just put wolf guide throws everything off balance. The guide is misguided.

Jeakilo In reply to TheCynicalHound [2010-06-18 05:13:39 +0000 UTC]
I see that you have a valid point; I can see where I was unintentionally misleading in the wrong way, however I am not to be held responsbile for someone who assumes just because I have something on this guide, it is a wolf. I was trying to target a specific audience with the title. I will add "and non wolves" - or something of the sort - to the title of the deviation if it really is that much of an issue.
Thank you for the interest.

somewhat of an answer to an above question:
gray wolves ARE mexican wolves, and arctic wolves, and timber wolves. all three of those wolves are subspecies of the gray wolf (canis lupus) which are categorized by their habitat.
the mexican wolf is canis lupus baileyi
the arctic wolf is canis lupus arctos
the eastern timber wolf is canis lupus lycaon
but they are ALL under the category of gray wolves.
also, to another person's defense, only 6 of 10 are these of wolves.
not trying to insult you or attack you, just clarifying!

Jeakilo In reply to colbies [2010-03-20 22:22:02 +0000 UTC]
Nono, thank you! x)
So is the gray wolf basically the one that shouldn't be there? Because obviously there are differences between the arctic and mexican; even if they're sub-species, they're still different. I wasn't really caring about being completely accurate when it came to "this is or is not a completely different breed of wolf", I just wanted to put up a good example to show the differences in anatomy of commonly used species that canine artists often use.

colbies In reply to Jeakilo [2010-03-21 01:20:24 +0000 UTC]
basically, if you wanted to show the subspecies, then yes. grey wolf is the one that wouldn't belong.
you could replace it with:
the eurasian wolf (canis lupus lupus)
tundra Wolf (canis lupus albus)
italian wolf (canis lupus italicus)
all three are also subspecies.
