The C-Section

Materials and Methods
Nikon D80 + 50mm f1.8 + IR remote. Tutu is made. Octopus lamp for lighting. Minor vignetting in post editing. Color balancing. Darkened shadows and increased midtones to create a slightly better contrast.

Additional Comments
Hoping to do more with this style of lighting. I've been meaning to do this concept for awhile. I would much prefer it done with a pregnant model though. If anyone wants to replicate the concept with a pregnant model feel free; I'd love to see the results. Or maybe I'll try this shot again in a decade or so

PS: No, these markings are not the markings for a real cesarean. This is simply a conceptual realization; not a literal representation.

I generally hate explaining concepts but some people seem to be interpreting this photo way too literally. One deviant seems to have summed up the interpretation fairly well: "Sounds painful. But what do I know about childbirth; I'm a guy. LOL on the tic-tac-toe board!"

In other words: It's a lighthearted, childish spin on a painful sacrifice inspired by personal oblivion.

If you want to suggest another title, feel free. If you interpreted the concept differently, I'd love to hear what it was

just my interpretation without reading your explanation...and probably a very relevant expression in this day and age...

I love it when a shot has a meaning behind it or a story.

I quite enjoy the concept myself. Having witnessed a real birth, I know that's not the real markings.
It's good to put a lighthearted feel to some serious stuff now and then. What's life without laughter, eh?

I think the title should be courage, because any woman who has to go through any labor of some sort is going to need a lot of it. And the picture really speaks to me.

JeanFan In reply to ILoveFruitsBasket [2009-05-20 19:14:48 +0000 UTC]

Interesting suggestion. While I agree it does take courage to undergo a cesarean, people already seem to misunderstand the cesarean title and would probably be even more confused by a title based on cesareans

I like this a lot and the concept!
At first, I thought it was a take on the lines for some sort of bodily surgery that people undergo to become skinny or beautiful, but I do get the concept on the c-section too. Excellent work.

Nice job, except that it doesn't represent a C-section in the least to me... C-sections are much lower, and just a single cut... Nobody wants to chop off their bellybutton.

JeanFan In reply to mindclover [2009-05-18 21:02:19 +0000 UTC]

Thanks I just added a post script in the Artist's Comments to help clear up some confusion:

PS: Yes, a real c-section consists of generally only one incision above the uterus. This is simply a conceptual realization; not a literal representation.

I generally hate explaining concepts but a lot of people seem to be interpreting this photo way too literally.

If you interpreted the concept differently, I'd love to hear what it was.

There will hopefully be another photo in this cesarean series entitled Afterglow, with scar lines instead of incision marks.

Because she doesn't look pregnant, it could be an interpretation of abortion. A tic-tac-toe game kind of meshes with that idea: X's are pro-choice, O's are pro-life. Something like that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JeanFan In reply to mindclover [2009-05-19 21:16:15 +0000 UTC]

Interesting interpretation though I guess I've never associated incisions with abortion

mindclover In reply to JeanFan [2009-05-20 19:58:53 +0000 UTC]

Not an incision but more like "x marks the spot." Or the red mark that a sniper rifle makes. Along those lines.

Yes a lot of people seem to be. I added a post script in the Artist's Comments to explain:

I think too many people don't know that the actual cut for a C-section is a single line... I did think you meant it the way you've just explained, but then reading the comments, I guess I got confused, lol. Thank you for the reply -- it's a great shot anyway, all the little details are beautifully set up and that red tone is lovely

Can't wait to see the next shot
