Throughout his service to Darth Sidious, General Grievous has repeatedly proven himself an innovator. However, his Sith Stalkers aren't his only creation. When Darth Sidious took over the empire, renamed/remodeled General Grievous to suit the new order, and made him commandant of the entire imperial military, General Grievous was assigned one of the new TIE-X1 Advanced Starfighters. He found he disliked his new TIE fighter as it was.

Its solar collector wings limited his visibility, and he found its armament of two chin-mounted blaster cannons sorely lacking. Therefore, Grievous personally modified his own starfighter. He altered the forward section of the wings, adding an opening in them to increase his visibility to ninety degrees on both sides. He also added four blaster cannons to the inner edges of these new openings.

He then customized his fighter's engines, increasing its speed and maneuverability. He then added a small hyperdrive, deflector shields, and a top-of-the-line electronic warfare suite. To further add some measure of intimidation to his fighter, Grievous painted it black, added red highlights to either side of the pilot pod, and had the solar collection panels tinted red.

The red-on-black color scheme made the fighter nearly invisible in space. These and its onboard electronic warfare suite allowed Grievous to sneak up on enemies and destroy them before they could react. It has been said that only a trained force user would be able to detect this fighter coming, though this rumor has never been substantiated.
