The TIE/in Interceptor Elite, also known as the TIE Interceptor Elite or, unofficially, the TIE Baron, was a type of TIE fighter used by the Galactic Empire. The interceptor elite was, similar to the standard interceptor, identifiable by the addition of four arrow-shaped panels tipped with laser cannons. However, what made the Interceptor Elite different was the rear solar panels of the wings, which gave the TIE Interceptor Elite a more unique profile than the standard TIE Interceptor.

The TIE Interceptor Elite was a class of interceptors manufactured by Sienar Fleet Systems for the Galactic Empire. The TIE Interceptor Elite was uniquely equipped with a hyperdrive, as well as a shield generator, as the fighter was meant to be flown by the Empire’s most elite TIE pilots, and thus served as the starfighters of squadron leaders, or occasionally, Sith Lords or Ladies. Because of the specific pilots meant to fly the TIE Interceptor Elite, it was more often called the TIE Baron, though this was not an official designation but stuck nonetheless.

The TIE Interceptor Elite was equipped with four solar collector wings, which aided the fighter’s stability and maneuverability. The twin ion engines were powered by two ion reactors with pre-charged deuterium power cells, which were capable of achieving an atmospheric speed of 1,250 kph. In addition to the four laser cannons on the wingtips, The TIE Interceptor Elite was armed with projectile launchers capable of firing concussion missiles and pulse warheads. It was well-protected with shielding and contained an ejector seat. The TIE Interceptor Elite was equipped with a class 2 hyperdrive.

The TIE Interceptor Elite was designed to be a next-generation TIE Interceptor. However, because of the more special features, the TIE Interceptor Elite didn’t quite see as high a production rate as the standard TIE Interceptor. Because of this, the TIE Interceptor Elite was designated for only the most elite TIE pilots and was used for TIE squadron leaders, which eventually led to the TIE Interceptor Elite being referred to as TIE Barons. The TIE Interceptor Elite was also a frequent favorite of Sith Lords and Ladies, making these particular TIEs painted in black and red color schemes.

Despite their rarity, however, there were at least five TIE squadrons that were composed entirely of TIE Interceptor Elites. One such squadron was under the personal command of Darth Grievous and was responsible for considerable Rebel and Jedi/Clone losses throughout the Galactic Civil War. Grievous’ squadron was present at the Battle of Endor, and while they were successful in killing numerous rebel and clone pilots, they would nonetheless be defeated by the end of the battle.

After the end of the Galactic Civil War, all remaining TIE Interceptor Elites were carefully absorbed into the Sloane Imperial Remnant. The TIE Interceptor Elites flying under the Sloane Imperial Remnant emblem would ironically end up flying alongside their former enemies, a factor that would be beneficial against the more hostile Imperial Remnants.
