Description EDIT: Fixed the ear and made the lines a little clearer.

A quick example of how I block out facial structure.

Draw the circle
Draw a + that meets at the center points, with the horizontal bar going the direction you want the face pointing.
Draw another line halfway between the vertical centerline and the edge of the circle, on the side you want the face to be.
Repeat beneath the horizontal.
These 1/2 and 1/4 lines show you where to plot the facial features

love the way you did the nose but I think that the person has a bt of a .. horseface

the eyes should probably be a little bit lower, but people have different face structures so it's okay

It's a great way for 'plotting' out where things generally go that holds consistency.

However... (Ignore the rest of this comment, I know you didn't ask for Critique. I'm just pointing out a few things I noticed. Also, I realize that this picture is over a year old.)

Firstly, where the neck joins the bottom of the jaw is too far back for the angle at which the head is tilted (or neck, depending on how you want to look at it). This would cut off the esophagus and airways while giving the person extremely thick tendons in the back of the neck. The top of the throat should connect in line with the back of the eye for a healthy person and just behind the edge of the lips for a slightly overweight person.

The next thing I notice is that the face/forehead ratio is out. The forehead is too short and round. The face should only take up the bottom half of the front of the head, with the eyebrows coming just above that line. Giving a forehead with that amount of curve suggests that the person has no frontal lobes, which means that they would have trouble adapting to new environments and situations.

Other than those two things, the only other thing that I noticed was that the ear is too vertical. It needs to be tilted back by about 10 degrees.

On the flip side, I totally envy your ear detail skills. That part of a profile pic really stumps me. And your eye is absolutely to kill for. It took me a year or two to figure out that it is impossible to people to turn their eyes 90 degrees.

Ahaha, wow, someone really put a lot of effort into a comment for once.

I'm glad you did note that this picture is old, and I appreciate the feedback greatly! Not to seem like I'm being defensive or anything, but I'd just like to point out that it was a baseline for my own, incredibly over-styleized way of drawing people. Personally, when I look back at this sketch, I cringe. I plan on doing an updated version with more realistic proportions and angles now that I DON'T suck massive amounts of butt at drawing properly.

Well, usually I don't comment, but I couldn't help myself this time.

It doesn't make you seem defensive at all. You're making a point in response to mine. Makes sense to me.

That's an interesting idea. Do you keep your art and compare it year by year to see your progress? I personally don't have the patience to do that.

And, admittedly, I have seen much worse But art, whether it's 'good' or not is still art.

Well yay! A lot of times when I respond to people's critiquing, they seem to think I'm just being a defensive wench about it, ahahaha.

Yeah, I keep my art archived like some sort of OCD spazz. There's a massive folder on my desktop, filled with other little sub-folders all organized by category, and in those folders all the pictures are arranged by date. Every once in a while, I go a ways back and look at my old stuff and laugh about how crappy it looks to me now. There have been a couple times where I took an old picture I had been really happy with at the time and completely redraw it just to see how my style has changed. It's usually so dramatic that you'd think it was a different person entirely.

The measurements are a great help and I like the way you worked it out too! Cool.

Is this a technique you learned from a class or something? I never saw such diagram. Thats super cool
I've practiced profiles since forever and I think they are still mis-proportioned!

H'actually, no, I've never learned any structuring in class. I'd been getting frustrated with drawing people... So I took some photos and just started drawing lines over them to see where things would land. Eventually, I wound up with the structure you see here!

Maybe I should try it out myself!

Totally! It's amazing how well it works, I've come up with some AMAZING blocking references using it... All you need is photos, a ruler, and a compass!

Thanks. I plan on doing a step-by-step illustration with specifics later.
