Really neat. I've never heard of hair being used like that (but I also never got past Ceramics 101 ). I like the composition and use of contrasting colors.

Thank you : )
The hair usage is not too obscure these days. Jeff started using it many years ago--discovering it by mistake while sweeping up some hair along with the sawdust for burning into the clay.
As Jeff always reminds me, It's not a big deal, it just happens to be a complementing finish for his forms and style.
cheers,
-idan

Just goes to show that good ideas can come to anyone who's observant.
And you're right--it's not a big deal. Talent trumps complementary finishes any day. Good thing you've got it

lovley really. love the way the hair raku is done it came out great. it makes me wish i still had a kiln .. or that i could get some clay.

Thank you so much. Just a small note, this is not raku, it is low-firing with an electric kiln, and then the hair is sprinkled on top, into the kiln, during the cooling stage.

Hi, beautiful piece!!! I'm interested that you do the horsehair, I assume in the cooling phase of the bisque firing, can I ask at what sort of temp you open up the kiln??? I've heard it's not great for the elements? Do you scorch your eyebrows??

It does have a unique feel to it, because it's burnished and low fired, as opposed to glazing. Almost feels like slightly wet, very smooth limestone....

That sounds absolutely gorgeous, and that texture comes across really well in the photo... I could just eat it all up!

*is interested* Ooh, that is a nice effect
But...you used hair? As in pressing it into the clay? I would have thought it'd be too light to leave an impression, not leave such a mark! (How neat)

JeffMargolin In reply to ShyMagical [2007-04-06 05:52:18 +0000 UTC]
So the thing with the hair is, that when the kiln is cooling down, you open it and throw the hair onto the piece - it burns on and leaves the markings (and also a smell that makes you want to check in the mirror to see if your eyebrows are still there ).

Ha! That's a good one....(the reason for this will become evident with the documentation of Jeff's work which I am planning for an upcoming journal)

DD well deserved. Looks great. I too would take something like this for a shelf at home. One question though, as it's hard to tell with no reference, how big is it?

Wow, hair? Like real hair? Like hair? That's awesome. I love how it came out, and it reminds me of something from a videogame that you probably won't know about so I won't mention it. But this is really awesome. Like totally. I don't mean to be redundant.

yup yup, real hair, thanks to the hair extension industry - I no longer have to seek volunteers for a hair-art trade...

JeffMargolin In reply to Blaz-Grl [2007-04-06 06:33:20 +0000 UTC]
thank you, and it's actually human hair that I use, the horse hair is to coarse and heavy for these pieces - so it tends to slip off and leave straight marks.
