These are beautiful.

They make me want to reach out and touch them, feel the curves and the smooth (I presume^^) surface.

Thank you.

This is very true, they are smooth like polished marble, and the carved surface has such an interesting texture because of the curves in the naked clay.

How did you make this???

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JeffMargolin In reply to Jarathorn [2007-10-16 00:18:19 +0000 UTC]

These are hand-built clay sculptures. Jeff created them using strips of clay laid on top of each other and joined together. He later drew the pattern onto the clay using a needle tool, and then carved with a cleaning tool. After the pieces dry more, he burnishes them by hand using a crystal stone and then they go to firing. The lines and spots are from hair and sawdust sprinkled on the piece as it cools down in the kiln.

I don't know how I managed to miss these lovelies in my inbox, but I'm glad you submitted them to *ArtisanCraft 's gallery so I did see it.

I think the are wonderful. They have a very organic shape and the 'brain-parts' adds to the life-like-ness. I'm thinking fossil, intelligence and beauty. The colors and details are amazing.

Thanks kiddo, Jeff will be delighted to see your feedback

He was really anxious to hear how these were received, since these are the first he's made in about 5 years (since the 2 big ones :thumb51744139: and :thumb51660408: ).

I love the color overlay over the carving. It really emphasizes the details.

I agree--the watered-down wash Jeff uses gets absorbed very nicely, and really brings out the carving.

Thank you

My first exposure to Jeff's work was at an art show that took place on the entire top floor in a newly constructed business building, before any interior walls were constructed, with views of San Francisco from the windows. Jeff had selected to display two 3-foot heads each one mounted on a near 3-foot metal base fabricated for them, standing side-by-side. They had such a presence, and I was in complete awe--I just had to get one. Before this I thought of Jeff as just the guy who likes cars that works down the street, all this was about a year before we were close friends
