Great stuff. I have a problem sometimes and I wonder if you have any ideas to address it. Drawing unique facial features is not a problem for me, but looking at a person and deciding on the RIGHT unique facial feature to give them, (in a caricature, for instance) is a bit of a challenge. Faces in real life can be very elastic (especially lips and eyebrows) and different angles can change the way a nose looks. To get things right I have to get myself into a sort of "sculptural" zone where I internalize the whole 3d makeup of the face, which works, but at the same time, the more details I show, the less the audience can imagine and the less "cartoony" the cartoon becomes, which can have unwanted stylistic implications. What do you think about that?

I think imagining a face a sculpture is a great way to visualize! To keep yourself from getting too worked up in the details, I'd suggest exaggerating the key features of the face. Maybe pick 2-3 things that really make a face unique an exaggerate them for a caricature. Even great caricatures won't capture every exact detail of the original person's face, there's always some of the artist's imagination worked into it. But the base likeness of those main features are what stick with us, the audience.

I don't know if you're still replying to comments on this, but I have a question: how much of a problem is it that some cartoons all look the same? When I was little, it didn't take any enjoyment away from watching them. Is there a time and place where similarly-styled characters are okay?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jeinu In reply to sweetandsimple [2012-03-11 15:10:56 +0000 UTC]

it's not much of a problem for tv shows, because similar characters can be salvaged by unique voices and personalities (this is usually quite easier for the animation budget aspect). if the characters are weak, the writing is weak, there is no saving the character design.

i think if there was a time and place for copy-paste characters, it would be for minor background characters. if they don't show up that often, no one's really going to care. but for the developing artist, copy-paste characters just keep them in a rut of familiarity. and that's what i'm really trying to dissuade here. i hope this answers your question!

Nice tutorial, but there is a reason why artists draw 'sameface'. It's because only 1 type of face is attractive. Sorry to be blunt, but it's true. No one wants an ugly person in their tv show/comic/manga/whatever.

Wow, I was just reading through the comments since the DD, and I'm surprised so many people disagree. What about things like Total Drama Island, Asterix, Bone, Zelda Wind Waker, Monster, One Piece and the works of Osamu Tezuka? Even The Simpsons does this to an extent. These are all cartoony and stylised, but they have loads of unique characters. So what if it's a little harder, these works are all the richer for having someone put in the effort.

I'm as guilty of "six-face syndrome" as anyone, but I still feel like this is a good thing to strive for. When I play Wind Waker or read Bone, I'm a little giddy at how beautiful and lively it all seems. Is that worth sacrificing for the sake of "easy"?

Thank you so much for this. When I was younger and really started improving in drawing skills, I never really had any OCs, so I never made serious distinctions, and now I'm paying for it. ^_^; I know I've had difficulty in making my characters look different, but this will definitely be a great reference to have. I'm sure it will help a lot in future works! Thanks so much.
