Description Hey! I have two webcomics where you can see this in action: Miamaska and Trial of the Sun . If you liked these tutorials give them a shot!

Check out part 1:The Body- fav.me/d2j3z86
Check out part 2:Lady Faces- fav.me/d2k4ym6

Part 3: Male Faces! Long awaited I know. I'm terrible. Next one's in two-three months, on age and weight! I am quite terrible at giving estimates. Hopefully it'll come out in August!

All those characters up there are copyrighted to their respective owners, I do not claim ownership to any of them.

This tutorial series was inspired in part by an article on the TvTropes website. tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php... Click there to see more examples!

Oh no... seing how these subtle changes affect the whole character's personality makes me worry about my lack of concern about keeping proportions and features regular from scene to scene D: . From now I think I'll pay more attention to them in order to keep a realistic, constant personality all the way through with your advice in mind. Thanks a lot.

Hey there!
I found your tutorials through a tumblr post and I have to tell you, I'm so glad for this! I've only just come back to drawing (had quite a long break) and now that I've somewhat achieved my own style, I wanted to tackle this exact topic, but I was rather unsure how to start. You gave me really cool input, so thanks a lot for that

It's such a huge headache when everyone's ocs in a fandom look like barbie dolls from the same mold. Or characters for anything really.

thesilverhaze [2013-07-12 09:18:09 +0000 UTC]

when you draw the faces do you use a base first (big oval and then draw the lines for eyes, noses etc) or just draw the shape instantly...?
i'm sorry if my question is confusing...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jeinu In reply to thesilverhaze [2013-07-12 15:44:59 +0000 UTC]

Dno't worry it's not confusing. For faces that I'm familiar with (like characters in my comics) I don't usually need to sketch the underlying structure because I've drawn it so many times. But for most characters, I do draw the underlying circles and basic shapes to make sure I've got it right.

Valravna [2013-07-10 16:02:09 +0000 UTC]

Do you have any tips on drawing for example a tall male and a short female, without making the female look like a little kid? Generally drawing height differences in a good way?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jeinu In reply to Valravna [2013-07-10 16:37:39 +0000 UTC]

If they are adults, I would suggest making the woman more obviously grown up (curves and the like). if the female character is more boyish looking however, then i'd suggest making changes to the face (making eyes smaller primarily; large eyes on a small character makes people assume they're a child).

anytime that you do big height differences like that you should particularly keep in mind that the head-to-body ratio and the eyes-to-face ratio! big head, small body with big eyes makes people assume "child" (say, for instance, the head takes up 1/4 of the entire character's height). If you keep the head-to-body ratio higher (like 1/6 or 1/7 for cartoony figures) people will likewise assume they are older, because those are the proportions that come with growing into adulthood.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jeinu In reply to YamiSelina [2013-07-10 16:23:14 +0000 UTC]

I have plans on making it an 8 part series but I have mega lagged on it recently.. plus being busy and all. every time someone comes into the comments here and bugs me about it, it gives me a boost of energy to do an illustration or two for it though!! but i haven't totally abandoned it

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

YamiSelina In reply to jeinu [2013-07-10 18:21:27 +0000 UTC]

I can totally understand that. ^^
If you want to, I can come here and bug you every once in a while, maybe once in a few weeks or how your time schedule would allow it, then you can always illustrate a few things and some day it'll be finished

Also, THANK YOU for making this tutorial! I'm currently trying to design 4 new OCs [I like the story I thought of so now they need names and looks XD] and this has been really helpful, especially the body structure! ^^ Somehow I realize that I mostly used the "Rectangle" type of body Though, since I still need to make decent references of my OCs I guess I can still change that and say the old drawings look so different because of my lack of drawing skill.
So now my sharkfolk OC has the inverted triangle body type, the orcafolk one is probably going to be rather muscular and for the other two [dolphinfolk and lungfishfolk] I still gotta think of one later [Though I'd probably better work on one at a time, otherwise I'll only be confused :S]
Sorry for the spam ;_;

Really awesome tutorial series!Β

As someone who's a beginner in character designing (and I've always wanted to use different features and body types for my characters! ), these are all really helpful! I love the tone and sense of humor! It's really understandable (love the questions, they're good for second thoughts on a design), and pretty encouraging to beginners. The layout is really well done too.

Continue sharing your knowledge with the curious, and nurture improvement! Have a nice day~

I've actually been considering doing an addendum for this series specifically for drawing caricatures for people without them being too realistic but still recognizable.. Knowing me, it probably won't happen for a few months, so in the meantime just try singling out his most unique features (long face, broad cheekbones and high, narrow eyes with shaggy hair) for now >.>
