Description
Hey! I have two webcomics where you can see this in action: Miamaska and Trial of the Sun . If you liked these tutorials give them a shot!part 2: female faces here fav.me/d2k4ym6
part 3:male faces here fav.me/d3a6v8u
WELL ! I felt like making a handful of tutorials after taking some notes for myself and this is the result. I hope somebody out there finds this a little helpful. The next two parts will focus solely on faces, and i think everyone will find them much more interesting. Just wanted to get this one out of the way first.
See if you can guess all the characters on the bottom !!! All are copyrighted to their respective owners, I do not claim ownership to any of them.

Hmm, I'm going to gamble and say the characters are:
Cruella DeVille, the main potagonist from Psychonauts, Bugs Bunny, TF2's Medic, Crash Bandicoot, Mckey mouse and Carl(?) from UP.

I really need to learn to develop a sense of body shape, all my characters kinda look the same... This looks really useful though! Thank you!

Interesting and good! I write, rather than draw, but the same basic ideas apply to writers, vary your characters, both as to body type and personality.
The former of these is a problem for me in two ways, I have a strong preference for one kind of women's shape, and worse, a lot of my characters are at least loosely based on people I have known, and while each one was very individual in many ways, basic body type wasn't one of them, all were curvy, tending to quite busty. It's the kind of figure I've had a liking for for many decades, and isn't likely to change. Makes physical description more difficult because the types are quite similar.
However that may be, this is very good about pointing to ways of avoiding my trap. Again, well done.

Honestly, from the silhouettes I could only make out Mickey and Bugs. However, your advice is certainly a wake up call! I'll try to vary my seven characters body shapes. But considering only two of the are have hit puberty, I'll have to find other ways.

Thank you so much for this! There are tons of resources for female characters but if you are like me and have 7 male characters...well, it becomes so much harder to try and make them physically unique.Β
Quick question: have you any tips for creating a male body/face structure that is fairly feminine? I am creating a character that is described has having a feminine build but I'm not sure what the best features to exaggerate/soften are.
Thanks again!

I do have some tips regarding that in part 3, towards the top. For body structure specifically, I would actually recommend doing an exercise where you draw the character as the opposite sex a few times (and each time, give a different body structure; curvy, slight, athletic, etc). This'll help you to recognize what you want from the design (narrower shoulders, less muscular build) as well as what you don't want (perhaps breasts and an hourglass figure might be too girly).Β

Awesome tutorial, thank you! Any suggestions for when you're making fanart from source material in which most of the characters already look similar or have similar body types (Β because of the art style)?

jeinu In reply to Clashe [2014-08-03 02:44:47 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I'd either recommend exaggerating the most unique characteristics already given to a character or making the character's personality a part of the design. So maybe for one example, if one character is friendly and bubbly, I'd give them a rounder face, bigger eyes, very open and expressive face. A mean-spirited or cruel character, I'd likely lengthen the face, give a lower brow on smaller eyes, make them a little gaunter. That's probably a little cliche, but it'd help to differentiate them at least haha.

This was extremely helpful, i've slowly been developing my own manga style though time, I've been careful with different body type for men and women, but this shows how you can play with shapes to create a more unique cartoony feel and that's what I was looking for. Thank you so much!

Ah wow! Thanks for making this! Now do you have any tips on a art style? Somedays I wish my art style was different and more cartoony but then I want to make it more realistic...
π: 0 β©: 1
jeinu In reply to FoxTone [2013-11-12 08:48:46 +0000 UTC]
Your art style is something that will develop over time, so I guess the best advice I can give is to just keep drawing reguarly. Borrowing from other artists is fine, but always remember going back and understanding the basics (realistic life drawing, gestures, portraits etc) will solidify whatever style you choose.Β
