A thought provoking exercise for character designers. Although alot of character designs are more simple to keep as a template and keep the cast consistent, and also make them easier to draw, easier to draw from memory, and make them appeal to people who like other shows that have characters that look like them.

oh having same faces certainly is a time saver, but if you can't tell them apart in black and white then there's a problem.

i guess thats why designers often go with different hairstyles and colours with the 2 main characters having one light and one dark haired.

i guess it works with animation and manga when teams of people have to draw the same characters the same. Not as inspiring as the ideas you suggested, but I guess anime/manga designs havent really changed much in decades because people like that look too.

I know your comment is from like a year and a half ago? But whatever. Have you seen Fullmetal Alchemist? It has a very simple style, but the artist has a lot of varied character designs.

I'm in trouble with using the same nose shape over and over. :/ I just find one nose shape better than another and it's hard for me to draw something that I don't find pretty. :c Though I do seem to keep my style so it's weird. Then again I can never draw the exact same thing twice, which annoys me. I practice and practice and I still cannot. :c Makes me feel a bit sad, but oh well. I did do one thing, not with the face really, to make a character not look like another... I slashed off one arm from the character. Quite easy really.

Faces can be as annoying as hands sometimes especially old ones or baby faces...
This is quite helpfull.
I have problems with the shape of the faces(and lips, i guess) mostly, but i am improving.

It's just a shame that with some anime art styles (there are many, and I'm only referring to some of the different styles), you can't really put a whole lot of detail like this into characters without them looking inconsistent with the rest of the cast or looking like a random "western" cartoon character was thrown into the bunch.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

jeinu In reply to Katrya1941 [2011-07-15 02:36:11 +0000 UTC]

yeah, i find it even more unfortunate when people only learn to copy anime styles, never really understand the basics... anyway thanks for the comment.

Katrya1941 In reply to jeinu [2011-07-15 03:34:10 +0000 UTC]

I know I'm not perfect, but I have tried other styles and such, it's just my challenge is to find out how to stick to my style (since I have a comic drawn in said style) but make characters a bit more individual without deviating from the style and therefore make the change seem inconsistent and strange.

i know the feeling, my sketching style fluctuates wildly from week to week. i hear a lot of artists go through this though, so i wouldn't fret about it

I think for cartoons it's just easier to animate that way

jeinu In reply to faILpiNTFuTUReiN [2011-07-15 02:31:42 +0000 UTC]

certainly is, but it sacrifices character distinction

I've read all three of these and I must say good work! These are all full of great tips and good illustrations showing what you're talking about. I always try really hard to keep my characters varied (though I still need work, especially with men) but even for me this is full of useful reminders. I will say this is very much aimed at folks doing comics, one shot animations, and general illustration rather then your typical cartoon show animation. As other people have said in a lot of cartoons they keep the faces the same for a lot of characters for ease of animation (or rather because it's faster and therefore cheaper for them in most cases).

That doesn't make this any less helpful though (and doesn't mean people shouldn't still strive to make better designs in animation)! I'll be linking to this from my blog (both on DA and my artblog) it's too awesome not to^^

jeinu In reply to FreckleOnMyPalm [2011-07-15 02:34:42 +0000 UTC]

yeah, as an animator i know the pull towards just using the same face shape. i don't mind it so much because it can be done well if the characters at least had unique faces, but so many of them don't. there will probably always be cookie-cutter shows, but this is for the people that want to break away from that
