I hope this is useful to some of you :] It's not the most detailed tutorial ever, but it's a walkthrough and gives a glimpse of how I work. Feel free to comment and ask questions! (I know some steps aren't exactly clear xD)

Hmm... when you say merged, which one went on top? And did you put it to a blend option, or was it a lowered opacity?

The smudged one was lowered to 60% opacity and placed on top of the nonsmudged one, then the two layers were merged together (:
