Must. Restrain. Self. I LOVE THOSE STAIRS! *cough* Sorry. I love spiral staircases, it's my big goal in life to get a house that has a spiral staircase. Beautiful, simply beautiful.

Great shot! Love it in black and white, love it that you got it at a time when there were no people, and love the perfect crop. Wonderful image!

Thanks so much for your comment! I had to wait a loooooong time for a shot without people! I a bunch of them with people, but I prefer this one without.

hehe,

It took me 30 mins with my digital cam to finally make a nonblurry shot...
Quite hard to do uh ?

Btw, i've done it in color and black n white me too. I still prefer the color shot. The stairs are still grey, but theres only a little bit more yellow on the walls.

And yeah, abit clichΓ©.

And, for myself, i arranged my pics to not show the first stairs (like we can see on the lower right side of your pics) I thought they were just useless and added not so beautifull nonfocused parts to the pics

Yeah, I took many different shots, but I love the strong diagonal of the beam on the bottom right stairs and I really like the blurryness of that section. I still prefer this image in black and white. This was, of course, originally in colour (I set my own grayscale values in post process to get the most out of all the colour values) but I prefer the black and white because I think it enhances the rough texture in the concrete and metal and the overall shape of the spiral. I love texture and form which can become so lost in colour images. Yes, the original had a lot of yellow it! Those lights are an odd colour! I set my camera at a light temperature to slightly reduce the yellow cast, but I wanted to retain a bit of the original lighting atmosphere in the colour version.

It’s a little clichΓ©, but it’s the best clichΓ© I’ve seen in a long time.

I thought those stairs looked familiar! I tried to take a shot too but there was not enough light so the pictures I took came out blurry

you mastered this shot perfectly

lovely!

jennytaylor In reply to splucy [2005-06-24 03:34:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your comment! Yeah, the lighting definitely wasn't optimal in that staircase. I didn't have a tripod with me either! But I set my camera to timer mode, wraped the neckstrap around the bannister for added stability, and held it as still as possible!

well congrats on that happy someone found a way of taking a non-blurry photo of it

intresting use of shallow dof here. i enjoy how the patterns change in the bokeh.
great staircase you've found here, i'm a sucker for them. good contrast, even if i would love to tweak it a little in ps.

very good job (found it through the quality aproved-feature on the frontpage.)
gonna have a look in your gallery now

Thanks for the comment! Yeah, I am a sucker for staircases too, and I just couldn’t pass this one up! I didn't ideally want to use the shallow depth of field, but in the low lighting situation and without a tripod, I didn't have much choice I managed to keep the camera pretty still though. I’ll be more prepared next time I go to the Arc de Triomphe! I am very indecisive on the issue of contrast when I am editing in PS. I had a professor in college that was obsessed with greytones and I always hear his voice in my head when I am editing! I do normally prefer a bit more contrast though. For this image I slightly stretched the histogram and made a small curves adjustment for a bit more contrast.

intresting story with your teacher
i see what you mean with the aperture, it worked well here though. It's not that easy to shoot stairways of that kind and perspective with a tripod, you'll see !

good luck.
cheers

Thanks for the comment! Yeah, I felt like I was spinning when I took it! Although, I was leaning over a bannister and all the blood was rushing to my head... so that probably didn't help!
