Description
Line art for a piece I initially did for the StH Valentine's contest. Even though I'm single AND that cynical I decided against it. Mainly because I didn't get it inked and colored promptly. I plan to ink and color this, just on my own time.Inspired by the Death of Superman trade paperback cover. I'm pretty sure this has been done already by someone else, but I can't recall. Just thought I'd put my own spin on it. Pretty satisfied actually, just not done yet.
EDIT: Inked! I tried my hand at digital inking in Illustrator since the brushes available allowed me to work with line weight more dynamically. Verdict: not even close to worth it.
This took me about 12 hours to ink because I kept experimenting with different brush types and directions. I could've inked this by hand a dozen times over in that amount of time.
Oh well, hopefully it'll just make the colored version that much better... but I doubt it.

I like it. I agree the comics should be more like this, but the destruction of Knothole already seemed pretty dark to me.

Thank you. :thankyou: As I get older I'm certainly gonna take a more mature angle on my art, even if it is something from my childhood.
It was, but I lend that to He's pretty much single-handedly saved that comic, thank God.

Meh. The recent Suppression Squad saga was great, but the current Iron Dominion saga is starting to bore me out. It's okay if you bring characters back from the past, but not after a damn 140 issues... that's pretty alienating to the newer fans.
Ian should kill more characters off and have more satisfying romantic dramas (which does NOT include pairing loved and nostalgic chracters like Sally with uninteresting and unloved characters like Monkey Khan.) Bunnie+Sonic for instance would be fun. I never liked BunAnt anyways. Lose the zero and get with hero, Buns!
If you like mature Sonic comics, you should check out mine called The Farmgirl Chronicles starring Bunnie.
Crap, I just desperately advertised myself again.
Anyways, keep up the good work.

Yeah, I can see your point there. I think the plot building is still substantially improved, but the characters could've been chosen better.
More deaths or even robotizations would help to up the maturity, hell the believability of the series. They've been fighting a war for how goddamned long and they've only lost like 3-4 chars, all of which were unimportant supporting characters anyway!
I really disapprove of how Robotnik's defeat was handled. They locked up Knack for Christsakes but they just let the one enemy they've devoted the majority of their life to go, just like that, because he went batshit crazy?
I'll head on over and check your work out (desperate or not ). You've got me intrigued.

As I get older I tend to take an older approach to my interests. It is sad, but that is exactly what I was going for. Thank you for the appreciation.

Nice work, love Sally's expression. It's got alot of great emotion to it.

It's good to hear that, because Sally's expression is what I was worried about the most. I always feel I have trouble invoking deep emotion in my subjects, but hearing that it worked out from an outside source is reassuring.

I like it alot, I kinda wish that the Sonic universe would become alot more dark, maybe we would see something like this if it has. I honestly think that's what would make Sonic interesting again if it were to do that, I mean hey. It worked for Conker.

Believe me as I've grown with the series (which I've been with from the start) I've wished it would grow in its maturity. But Archie has to deal with the chains that SEGA binds it with so it's always a knife's edge they tread. I'm SO happy that is now writing for them because I know he will bring some quality plot and character building to the 'verse.
Thank you for the kind words, and I'll endeavor to produce even better work in the future.

Ahh, yeah I'm sure Archie would be gutsy enough to make that turn if it weren't for SEGA holding them back. SEGA has to realize also that I'm sure by this point, everyone that played Sonic 1 back then is grown up as of 2010. It would be a breath of fresh air and something that would, like I said, make the series interesting again.
And you're welcome. I look forward to it.

Agreed. It would have given the comics more attention, too if they did that. I mean, look at Batman RIP now, how controversial was that?
But still, I'm surprised Sega never really thought of this yet, it'd be interesting to see.

It'd certainly get me interested again, that's for sure. I remember playing a Sonic fan-made game a few years ago called Sonic Epoch, boy, you talk about depressing storyline. I think that's possibly as close as we're going to get to getting a darker themed Sonic.
And same here, but who knows they might consider it one day.

Exactly. It would give the franchise a much deserved shot in the arm in not just the games, but also the comics and quite possibly future cartoons. I plan on writing a Sonic/Batman crossover where members of the Rogue's Gallery give certain Sonic charcaters a run for their money, including Sonic himself going up against the Joker, where he literally almost drives him insane. It's an interesting idea, if you think about it.

Well, yeah. But I never played Shadow, so, yeah. Personally, I would have loved to see Sonic go up against this Doomsday-like character who didn't just wear him out physically, but also mentally, kind of like what Bane did in Batman: Knightfall, just have a newcomer start his story in a controversial way like brutally injuring the star of the series or just kill him off and create an intersting arc from there.

If Sonic was seriously injured or killed, I'd prefer it was by Robotnik. I didn't like how two nobodies just appearted on the scene and trashed Batman and Superman. It should have been Lex or the Joker.

Well, either way, it would have been cool. I personally think a new villain has a better shot at doing something like that than someone who is already established. That's why I like Bane so much, he had a better chance of breaking Batman's back than the Joker or Two-Face.

To me it seems more like a publicity stunt. I don't see some random guy being able to take Bats or Supes out when legions of their greatest foes couldn't.

True, yes, it's all about the attention, but a big super-villain team up would be too cliche in my opinion. And what else would be a better way to introduce a new villain by making him do something the others couldn't by killing or beating the ever-loving snot of the hero?
It also makes for a damn good story arc to try and bring him back.

I don't mean some sort of routine super villain team up. I mean something epic with depth. A strong "final" showdown because the hero and arch-villain. Examples might be the final battle between Batman and the Joker in the Dark Knight Returns, or the Joker/Batman fight in the Killing Joke. If Sonic was pushed to the brink of death, I'd want it to be in a fight of that scale against Robotnik. I wouldn't want some muscle-bound rookie to just show up and trash him. Not that I dislike Doomsday or Bane, but if the hero's gonna die, it needs to be at the hands of their arch-nemesis.
