2006. Maya 6.5, mental rayMade while working for the now defunct Starz Feature Animation. This was a 3d render test of the viability of a Mary Blair inspired storybook world. It had to be somewhat dimensional, yet retain a painterly feel. It is entirely 3d, including the stylized, brushstroke grass.

Not sure if I can see anyone actually painting like that - it's so perfectly smooth! The grass is kind of odd looking for me...maybe because it kind of reminds me of how I draw fields of grass, and I don't like my grass too much. xD What I do like though is the fence and the detailing. It reminds me of the cartoon shorts Bernard.

Very nice blend of 3D and the hand drawn painterly feel. I know from my own experience that it is not an easy thing to pull off well. Good job.

Is it only due to cartoony textures or did you have to customize rendering params too ?

It is mostly cartoony textures, but the one thing that needed render help was the grass. In order for it to look right it had to not do any kind of shading along and around the strand.
