The battle for Castle Itter was fought on May 5, 1945 in the Austrian North Tyrol village of Itter, in the last days of the European Theater of WWII.The U.S. 23rd Tank Battalion soldiers of the 12th Armored Division led by Captain John C. "Jack" Lee, Jr. teamed up with a number of Wehrmacht soldiers led by Heer Major Josef "Sepp" Gangl, a defected SS-Hauptsturmführer Kurt-Siegfried Schrader, and some French prisoners of war who were recently freed, against the German 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division.
