Description Alrighty. Several people have told me that my photos are surprisingly good quality for something taken with a cheapy little Nikon Coolpix. So, I decided to come clean and show you what happens between the camera and the finished piece of art. In a nutshell, I try to capture a meaningful, non-blurry shot with the camera, then on my computer I do the subject justice by improving the tones and composition so that it is as visually appealing as possible.

In this comparison thingy you're looking at, the images on the left side are the original, untouched photos, straight out of the Coolpix. Only the first one is cropped. Some were taken with the old 4300, some with my new 7900. The right side shows the results of my photoshop work for each picture. All the tools I make reference to can be found in Photoshop under Image>Adjustments.

I know, some of the original photos suck compositionally. Namely Chronicle and Craftsmanship. I couldn't really frame Chronicle right, because of the way I wanted the camera to look in the mirror, and also I knew I'd be cropping out everything but the reflection later on. And to get the clarity I wanted on Craftsmanship, I had to sit on the ground with the camera held against my knee, so my choice of interesting compositions was quite limited.

Heehee, thank you! I tried to put in as much description as I could, so other people could take advantage of the same techniques that have been working for me.

I think that even though you use photoshop, your pictures are still really great. I work in a camera store and you wouldn't believe how crappy some pictures people can take with even a high end SLR camera, haha. I'm buying myself a digital SLR in a couple days, but it's nice to know that I can always pick up a cheaper camera and still make some great pictures~ Keep up the great work!

LOL! Yes, sometimes I think that the better the camera is, the lazier the photographer using it can become, while still thinking that he or she is making really cool images. Because of this, I prefer to stick with something like a Coolpix so that I won't start posting images of thoughtless stuff that just looks cool because of the camera.

Thanks very much!

You think your Nikon is bad? lol I'm stuck using a Coolpix 2500 at the moment

at least you have a 4300

But yes I know where you're coming from. Photoshop saves my life over and over again.

LOL. Nah, I don't think Nikon is bad, but the Coolpix is their cheapy camera (relatively speaking, of course). I'm actually quite happy with the results of mine, cuz I've got Photoshop to polish them. Really, the only part that bugs me about the original images is that underlying greyness that all of them have.

The 4300 isn't my current camera, cuz it broke, but you can tell I loved it because I replaced it with another Coolpix: a 7900.
