Description I was introduced to Suzy (the hugging one) and Bartholomew (the sulky one) yesterday after my mom emitted a blood-curdling shriek from the front patio. I found her pointing a shakey finger at her half-dead tomato plant. Suzy and Bartholomew, who had eaten all its leaves for dinner, were plumply perched upon its stem.

I couldn't blame Mom for making such a fuss. If you've never had the privilege of meeting a Tomato Worm, consider yourself lucky. These guys are each 5 inches long, and easily as thick as my thumb. I think they look more like long green ogre fingers than caterpillars. They give me the heebie-jeebies.

And yet, it isn't every day that one finds not one but TWO giant worms, with easy access to a camera. The photographer-Jericha and the heebie-jeebie-Jericha had a wrestling match in my head. Guess who won?

Dude, I found one of those on my dad's garage door, and it was huge! He had a big horn on his butt. I named him Chuck, but you have to say it like your pooping out a large painful turd. Like this, "CCCHHHUUCCKK!".

Awesome macro shot. You do a great job. Seriously.
Bartholomew happens to be my favorite name in the world, too... I wish my name was Bartholomew.

Thanks! With this one, it was just lucky that I found them. As far as taking the picture goes, all I had to do was be brave enough to carry a pair of giant worms into my house and set them on a big piece of paper on the counter. I've taken a lot of pictures in the same place, with a florescent desk lamp for lighting, so I set it up in my usual way, and the awesome subjects made it pretty easy to find a good shot.

They're also nicknamed "Tobacco Worms" where I come from. I should know...I work in the darn stuff. What's REALLY messed up is when your find one that has been...um...shall we say "tagged" by a Parasitic Wasp.

Really nasty. I kinda feel sorry for the worms...but these two look awesome!

Jericha In reply to LeneeTheSunsetAngel [2007-07-26 19:22:38 +0000 UTC]

Ewwww. Yeah, these guys are creepy enough without any weird parasitic relations. They blend in so well that you can have your nose a couple inches from one and not see it, so there are usually yelps accompanying our tomato worm discoveries.

Do they turn into moths? I'm wanting to think they do, but I'm not sure. This merits further research!

Cool!! I love the lighting on the tomato worms. It gives of a nice green glow through the worms. Very cool effect. 5'!! Man those are some big worms. I wish I could see a tomato worm. Great shot.

What a wonderous shade of green! Tomato "worms" (which are caterpillars, not worms) are funny. One time, I was picking the tomato worms out of my grandpa's garden and got about five of them. They weren't yet as big as you describe, but definately on their way to getting that size. Whenever any of them came in contact with each other, they'd headbutt each other!

They're glowing! The lighting is pretty awesome on this photo. And the worms are so cute (even though in real life tomato worms give me the chills *shudders*).
