Description Here’s another 3D fan based model that I’ve worked on this last summer vacation (2007)
Part of my Independent 3D modeling practice… [Subject: Material Mapping / Texturing]

Tools:

- 3D’s Max6- for the model and rendering
- Photoshop CS- for painting the texture maps and layout

It was Based and Inspired from the Original HEAVY GEAR CGI Animation series- created and TM by Dream Pod 9… but still, this model was based on my own design… I also put my name on the collar part of Mech as the Pilot’s name… Cool ^_^ !... Check out under his feet also, I even fully detailed the Treaded wheels.

I also did some quick sketches of the robot parts, as my reference for the design before I turn it into a 3D model… It can be found at my scrapbook - [link]

I decided to create this model b’coz, it will be a good subject for creating and applying a realistic metallic textures (or material maps) on a Mech model for my studies… I’m trying to achieved a texture maps that look realistic as much as possible on the model, like for example: Scratches, Rust, Dirt, Scraped paints, Stains, Dent, Decals and other stuff to make it look real… And those are the qualities of textures that can be found on a Heavy Gear. [Unlike Gundams, that always looks new and clean]. *saka masyado nang maraming gumagawa ng Gundam model dito sa DA… at para maiba naman heheh!

Took me almost 2 weeks for constructing the model… and another 2 or 3 weeks for applying the materials… (and that includes slacking around and playing some video games, when I feel a little bit lazy hehehe)
3weeks for applying the material - Actually I’m not really quite familiar with the Material Editor yet, that’s why I had to do some research first, or do a trial and error basis onto it, and that take much of my time for creating this model. Besides, this model actually consists with more than 300 mesh parts or objects… can you imagine that Then I had to paint those maps also onto Photoshop CS then I had to apply it on the model using Unrwap UVW, and some maps are not rendering correctly, so I had to check every each parts, and apply its own corresponding coordinate of the map on the mesh using the UVW map modifiers.

Well this is my first time to do a fully detailed mapped model so It may not that quite convincing… At least, now I finally got some ideas on how to create textures and how to apply it. Now this will go down to my Portfolio…

Hope you Guys like it ^_^

insane detail.. great use of multiple apps.. i have yet to even learn colouring or texturing or anything to make my work look real and this as you said is like a new standard for you. its inspiring to look at. im just starting 3D and learning thru youtube vids.. hopefully i can get to this level too. oh i see you made this way back when.. so i have a lot of catching up to do.. thanks for creating such inspiring work. i like the mash up of shapes you created a nice size and ominous look.

Thanks!! Yes, this one is already an old artwork of mine way-way back since 2007, and texturing it's not that new to me actually ... I already learned the process of how to apply textures on the 3d model and used to it by now. I'm very glad that you like this artwork, and find it very inspirational for you and other artist.. don't worry you will achieve this kind of level too, just keep on study and practicing the process Good luck and god bless.

You also put mine to shame as I am going for the same quality as the gears from the Heavy Gear II's cutscenes.

You at least got out and had some exercise while working on this right because it looked like it took a very long time?

I wonder, could this be used as the (never illustrated) Dingo civilian gear?

jerix In reply to JakarNilson [2009-02-12 16:30:05 +0000 UTC]

Nah!!.. this is my gear , and it's not related to the original animation, Ok ^_^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JakarNilson In reply to jerix [2009-02-12 17:33:36 +0000 UTC]

I realize that. But the gear is around the same size as a Hunter/Jaeger, right?

The animation (Southern propaganda) and the video games (Northern propaganda) are both based on the RPG/Miniatures Wargame by Dream Pod 9. Most of the designs have been made into 1/144 scale miniatures, but there are a few that have no artwork associated with them.

jerix In reply to JakarNilson [2009-02-13 10:10:01 +0000 UTC]

Yah! you are right, it's a Hunter/Jaeger size ^_^, but still, it is not related or associated to the original Dream Pod 9's plot artwork or story... I just made this up and It's my very own design, OK.
