Description
LEGO Marketing Art, Basketball, Prismacolor Pencil. Most of the work I've been doing lately is unable to be posted for reasons of confidentiality. That's the biz.
However, seeing as I submitted this job last summer, I'm gambling it's already out there somewhere, and no longer a protected secret.
This piece was "experimental" anyway, a test for the Lego people to see if I could handle the style in which they wished their product/characters to be portrayed. They wanted it "on-model," but also with a dynamic flair, sprinkled with a healthy dose of fun and humor. They liked it, and nothing was rotten in Denmark. LOL!
Real bricks, those Danes.
Oh! And obviously, all characters and copyrights belong to the Lego Group.

Very nice! Representing the LEGO minifigure is a tricky yet very important aspect to the company to keep on point and you have done both with brilliant execution! Truly stellar work here!
Plus, it's always exciting to see other work from other LEGO employees!
I've been employed by LEGO for 5+ years.
Keep up the excellent work my fiend!

Thank you very much, Mr. Hinkle!
But I'm not an employee of LEGO. I just did this piece as part of a freelance assignment years ago. Currently, I'm on staff at Warner Bros again.
Cheers!

Gratuitous? No, since the pose is faithful to the show-off displays prevalent in the NBA. I didn't go out of my way to invent the action to serve my own agenda. Further, it's a tremendous challenge to get dynamic action from those stiff, stunted, blocky figurines.
But I was well aware of the crotch concerns as I rendered this piece. I dismissed it all as trivial, and only an issue for those who go looking for one. I guess the more immature kiddies may giggle and clown with it. No big deal.
Illustrating LEGO characters is not a dream-job for me. Though it was an easy pay-day, I do prefer a better challenge.
Thanks!

what I really love about the lego series is that you managed to portray the initially quite ridig lego figures as totally flexible and animated..
and that's really not an easy task to complete!

Jerome-K-Moore In reply to Mykola31 [2008-04-04 12:08:02 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, Myk! You're absolutely correct. It wasn't that difficult though, since I've had the benefit of learning from some very talented animators over the years.
Actually, I could have pushed things even further, as I know there are fellow artists here on the site who could easily have applied their stylish skills as well. But I felt that initially I should seek a definitive, mainstream look, before getting wilder with extreme angles, stretching and bending, and forced perspectives. LEGO should be led along that route more slowly.

Haha! You know, people will always overlook the artistic value of pieces like these. It's like these days when I flip through some of my old He-Man cardboards and see how darn nice some of those old paintings actually were. Or like when I look at that horribly off model NES game boxart, but then I realize that anal fan nature aside, it's actually a darn nice picture probably done under the craziest deadline imaginable. Yeah man, respect!
Anywho, questions! Do you actually find an advantage to using the blue pencil for a finish like this, or do you just like the feel of that kinda pencil? For that matter, what's the physical size on most of your pics? You get all your stuff so clean I imagine it takes up half a wall when you're doing it!
Peace!

I try to keep most of my pro work 11x17 or smaller. Now that I'm freelancing, and I only have a scanner/printer/copier that accommodates 8 and 1/2 by 11 (alas!), so I adjust accordingly, and the majority of stuff I'm doing fits those dimensions.
I got into the habit of using blue pencil when I was on staff at WB. Preparing pencil art to be inked digitally by other artists kinda necessitated this process. It made it a little easier for them to distinguish their black lines. And as I've indicated elsewhere, the blue pencil also helped whenever we would then draw in a cartoon character's all-important eyes or pupils. These were drawn in black so that they stood out more, and it was harder for the inkers to get it wrong, making a character look cock-eyed. Thus, it was an aid, and a preventative.
Actually, working in blue pencil for finals is more difficult for me because it's not a proper lead. So you have to scrub to get that uniform line weight, and the smoothness you want. So I'm doing myself a disservice these days. But old habits die hard.

Oh snap! You know, I forgot to say thanks for your thoughtful reply here. Thanks! Man, ya get so caught up in work that you lose track of your manners...
Anyway, I hope your freelancing's been going great Mr. Moore. For now I've also been stuck with an 8.5x11 scanner. It gets rough with those largies, but the value on this puppy I got couldn't be better. Someday I'll hopefully get a larger one, so I won't feel as hesitant to work some projects larger.
Thanks for the notes on the blue pencil too. I know I musta asked a redundant question for you by now, but I appreciate your time explaining it again. Hey, if it still works for you, just stick with it. Client knows he/she's not getting shafted with such quality work, regardless of a few extra minutes here and there.

Now there's a familiar figure... although I animate them, rather than drawing them (the terrible quality of my storyboards backs up this claim, I really don't draw them!)

sweet jerome, so is it roughed out with a regular pencil or mechanical pencil then lightboxed tight with blue pencil?
just curious.

Thanks, DustMan.
Yeah, I either do the light-boxed rough/overlay clean-up, or I copy the tight rough in a very faint non-photo blue, and trace the lines over for a final crisp super-tight/ready-for-digital-inking pencil piece.
Savvy? Suckaaaaahhhhh?

What next? Do the Lego people want to see if air is breathable? It's an equally preposterous contention.
