Description
20th CENTURY FOX Marketing Art, Ham, SPACE CHIMPS. Pencil.I was contacted by an independent design studio to render the Space Chimps main characters for Fox directly from publicity stills as provided by Fox animation. Easy money. HaHa! It was my job to merely translate the 3-D art into 2-D line work. Nothing fancy. Just tedious.
Since the release date in the U.S. was yesterday, I guess it's relatively safe to now post this online. Nevertheless, all copyrights belong to 20th CENTURY FOX.
I think it was either very brave, or very dumb to launch this animated film in the wake of Pixar's WALL-E, Dreamworks' KUNG FU PANDA, and on the same release date as WB's THE DARK KNIGHT. I haven't seen CHIMPS, but from what I've glimpsed and read, it seems the studio may have produced the movie on a far less competitive budget. This strategy has succeeded in the past for those rare surprises. The marketplace is so cutthroat these days, but hopefully CHIMPS will find the audience and success it deserves.

I saw this movie for the first time this evening as it premiered on FX and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it! I have to say I absolutely adore Ham, I love the concept that he's the grandson of the real life "Ham the Astrochimp" and love Andy Sandburg as his voice actor!

What a coincidence that you just watched the film, and now you've found this drawing! Or, perhaps you were here before?

Actually I was just running a search for fan art. I'm thinking of doing some myself and wanted to see if I could find any other artists that have tried it. Didn't think I'd find actual production art! I've never tried adapting a 2d style from 3d animated characters before, so this souled be a fun new challenge for me.
Your lucky to have gotten this opportunity!

Cool stuff as always. I saw space chimps with my little sister and though it had potential, to be honest it was garbage compared to wal-e and kung fu panda. The characters were fun and great but the movie as a whole just wasn't a competitor.

Nice job...it captures his attitude perfectly. I have seen the film, and while it certainly is nowhere near Pixar-level quality, it's hardly the clunker some reviewers have made it out to be. The auditorium I saw it in was nearly sold out (though it was one of the theater's smallest ones), but the audience seemed to enjoy it. Andy Samberg did a nice job voicing him, making him a likeable character even at his cockiest.
By thy side,
Figaro

Easy money, indeed. Nevertheless, I love the line art and simple shading, both of which are fantastic. It's the little things in this composition that make it alive and give it personality.
Great work!
(I took a look at your gallery. Dang, how do you do it, man?)

Great work! His expression brings him to life!
And I agree that maybe it wasn't the best decision to release it on the same day as Dark Knight or near the time KUng Fu Panda. But who knows, it might work.

NICE work sir ive always liked the way u define volume on characters details . ure right on your honest comment about the release of these chimps at this very moment when theres so much competition on the office box lately.. but as u mentioned, lets hope these dudes make a good stand out there

Thanks, Mr. Cruz. But as I stated, I just had to work from an image the filmmakers provided me. All of the volumetric definitions were already solved. I merely translated them 2-dimensionally.

It's fun when so much information can be conveyed in a single image, revealing details about a character without having said or written a word.
Here, you get the perfect sense that Ham is a cocky daredevil that is far from perfect. The dent in his helmet reveals his goofy fallibility every bit as much as his name.

You're so right. From his disheveled hair to his chin forward expression, you did a marvelous job.
