Description
Literature Gallery: Chapters and Annotation Assignment
A brief sketch for an idea I had not long ago for the lit community.
I didn't go into anything on the submission side. More or less this is the presentation side one would see as they click on a Lit deviation.
I'm sure most of you don't know that I actually came to deviantART as a writer. It took a few years before I fell into what I'm doing here, now.
I've been meaning to re-upload some of my older work, and it occurred to me as I thought about doing so how entirely in need of help that whole process really is.
I hope this one is actually considered seriously. It could really improve our Lit system by leaps and bounds... and make it FUN to read again!!!
As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Dude...
You just described me...
I read someone else's story, and the similarities between his and the way I had imagined mine before I ever read his were almost scary.
So I decided to give it a shot, and here I am. The Commission Chronicles was born. And what I only expected to be 8 or 10 chapters has turned into a so far 23 chapter novel.
And I thank you for your own encouragement as well.
I doubt you have time to read it. But here's the link anyway.

I'll try very hard to get to it... but it may take me a bit. Please be patient.
And I know exactly what you mean about starting something that's only supposed to be so many chapters and it ends up being a mammoth!! Thankfully this last piece only went two chapters longer than I had intended (perhaps three, I may go make an addition here in the editing process), or I might have screamed.

OMG! You're actually PLANNING on READING it?!
Uhh... thanks!
And yes, you got off lucky there.
Mine grew quite a bit from the beginning.
Not that my fans are complaining.

Thanks! It was a quickie, really. hence the lack of details in the dA framing... but I was really only trying to push the idea, not my design skills.

It's a great idea that I'd be so grateful to see put into place. However, I have very little faith in dA to this end. Writing is not profitable for the company, and a lot of people simply do not have the time or interest.
Great job, and congrats on on the DD.

JesseLax In reply to SpellKeeper [2008-11-03 06:30:22 +0000 UTC]
I have a hard time finding an argument about writing being profitable here... considering the writing industry as it is, and deviantART as it is.
However if you wanna talk strictly money (albeit hypothetically), I'd certainly say that We're profitable. "We", of course, being "the writing community". I can only imagine that a better Lit Gallery equals a larger likelihood for subscriptions, and opens up the doors for other related merchandising for them.
I would imagine, anyway.
And thank you so much for the praise! Very kind of you.

SpellKeeper In reply to JesseLax [2008-11-03 06:38:38 +0000 UTC]
Well, I think merchandising is the problem. What exactly would dA sell? Self-published poetry and books? Not likely to have a high rate of sales. Of course, We are profitable, as a community, but most people come to a site like dA to get to that point in the first place. Plenty of artists have gotten their starts here, and I think it's safe to say that simply doesn't apply to writers.
Don't discredit yourself. One person commented that if this happened, they'd be forever indebted to you, and you said, no, be indebted to dA.
dA's not incompetent. They've had plenty of time to figure this out before now, and have chosen not to. If it happens, take the credit, and feel very proud and responsible. Because it's the little ideas like this that will matter in the long run.

JesseLax In reply to SpellKeeper [2008-11-03 07:42:51 +0000 UTC]
They're not incompetent by any means, certainly. But as we've all seen---those of us such as yourself who've been here so long---it takes a good long time for deviantART to solidify and employ any of it's new or optimized functions. Part of it, I'm sure, is due to dA still being a start-up company, and actually relatively small for the amount of revenue they're surely taking in by now. but in this last year we've seen myriad changes, all of which imply (to me at least) that dA is going to start moving a lot faster in it's actions and growth.
I find that very encouraging. It's felt like forever at a snail's pace, and now things a re looking very up! Not quite hair, but perhaps Turtlabbit?

First, congrats for the DD. It's an awesome idea.
Second, what I meant to say... What if we talk to all literature clubs on dA and gather enough people and order the staff to do a such change? But we need this, literature is too overlooked.
Maybe there should be something like choosing which part of the piece is to be in the preview box, because unlike visual pieces, we can't create attraction in the first glance usually. Not that I'm capable of creating any attraction..
But seriously, maybe if all literature clubs came together or something... It's a change writers deserve.

I think if I was to go further than this deviation to gather people up to promote this, it could be construed as abuse of the system and get me in trouble. Having said that, this means that i'm extraordinarily lucky to have had this DD'd because it will most certainly help me reach the widest audience possible on a single day.
And I love your idea about being able to choose which segment of text is shown in the preview box!! Very brilliant. Sounds like something that would be chosen on the submission-side of a function like this.
Thanks so much for your support!!

Well, yeah... It's just that I'm a person that can easily get flamed and start a riot.
Hope the staff sees it and maybe one day we will have this system... ^^
(Maybe I should make a proper suggestion or something about it? Or you can, too, if you like, someday because I'm not well with stuff like that... )
And you're most welcome.

If it were me, I would treat someone's work that I appreciated in the very same way I did any other piece on dA... featuring it in journals, or in a collection as a news piece with other relative things, or highlighting it in a favorites collection. Talking to friends who might genuinely love the idea and letting them make up their own minds as to what they think they'd like to do with it, is always a fun way to do it, too.
Thank you , by the way, for supporting th idea!

WEll, I don't fave much literature since I have my alter-ego account. But since I have the sub till december is a good idea to make this project go further righ? I might get a promo chain in *noticias too, which can help a lot. I translated a DD a few days ago, The 10 tips to write a novel and people seemed interested in more, so it might work. As for the news, never submitted one, but hey! you're giving me the courage to do so
You're welcome Always there to help in any ways
