I cannot edit journal/blog entries in the group, even though I am marked as having full control. I am a contributor in said group.
Is there a reason for this or a way to fix it?

Thank you for your time and help!

You have to go into individual permissions and open it for submissions under manage members section

When you open one of the group folders, there should be an "Edit Folder" button at the top right.  If you click that, then "Show folder options..." you should be able to rename the folder in the pop up.

I have a question that's plagued me for the past day, and you are very helpful in terms of groups, so here it goes:  I was recently named a Contributor for a group and upon submitting a deviation, it went directly to the "Featured" folder.  (From the submit art tab under my profile I clicked the group's name along with my gallery.)  I feel really bad because their featured folder leads people to the rules, which is helpful, but now mine is in the front.  Is there any way to move the deviation to another location in the group without re-uploading?  Thanks in advance.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

parallellogic In reply to emethone [2016-08-16 00:07:44 +0000 UTC]

When you go to the group's gallery and roll your mouse over your upload, do you see a pencil icon appear at the top right of the image?  That should enable you to move the deviation around if you have the proper permissions.  However, iirc, only founder and co-founder have that ability by default.  It may be better just to ask one of the higher-level mods to move your work to another folder.

I didn't read all of this I admit. The bottom line is if anyone starts a group expecting it to become popular overnight they're delusional. The best groups happen because the leadership leads by example. They bust their chops to make things happen, interact with the members, shake things up many many times, set manageable rules and enforces them ruthlessly and doesn't demand respect but earns it by listening and being proactive.

Anyone can start a group but only the exceptional happen with grounded common sense, the ability to make good choices and a willingness to work hard at it especially since no one here (on the civilian side) get paid a dime for their time.

~expecting it to become popular overnight they're delusional
Yeah, pretty much.

~The best groups happen because the leadership leads by example.
I'd say the biggest groups have been around a long time.

~They bust their chops to make things happen, interact with the members, shake things up many many times,
Posting regular journals in the group about contests and the like can certainly keep group members engaged.

~set manageable rules and enforces them ruthlessly and doesn't demand respect but earns it by listening and being proactive.
I find the shorter and simpler the rule list, the more likely users are to follow them.  I don't know about "ruthlessly", but typically either groups enforce certain rules or they don't.  Some rules can be important like when it relates to the quality of the art submissions.  Others I'd say are less important like trying to check if everyone has read the rules by including text in the join request.  Not ever rule improves the group.

~earns it by listening and being proactive.
Perhaps it's just my experience but most groups eventually hit a steady-state.  A constant number of new users join every week, there's a constant number of submissions, and the mods gradually lose interest in approving submissions since there's a never ending flow and it comes across as a thankless job.  In that regard I think Reddit has a lot better system where the group/community members vote on content rather than limiting to a select few individuals.  It really helps distribute the work load if any number of users become inactive.

~Anyone can start a group but...
The "work hard" aspect is more a symptom of the inefficiency of the groups platform imho.  There are some groups that pay their mods a few cents, AnotherContestGroup is one example.  I don't think you can really know/appreciate a "good choice" until after you've implemented it and seen the outcome.  You can list the altruistic qualities of a good group founder, but the real challenge, no matter how you do it, is maintaining interest from the group members.  To me that means keeping a heavy control on how much artwork gets posted to the group, only allowing in the highest quality content since that's typically what group members want to see.  Allowing in everything that meets the basic rules simply floods the inboxes of your members.

I guess I'm just lucky I picked a thematic so many people seem to enjoy. I started my main group by including every type of artwork, dropped one genre had a lot of people depart angrily, only to bring it back and most people forgave me. I've had my fair share of contributors that were excited and engaging just to fall away and easily demoted. But there is one artist who will fill the inbox by finding and promoting a variety of artists on a daily basis that makes my "job" easier.

Since this isn't Reddit but Deviant Art it doesn't interest me one bit and I rank it up there with Twitter (what a waste of lack of characters) and a phone book (does anyone even remember what the purpose was for those things - yeah, me neither).

Groups are what you put into them. Put little effort with little interest and no one notices it or will remember it. Work your ass off to make it great and the population you reach with it will knock your socks off. For the record my group has been around for 5 years and I'm proud we're about to reach 500k pageviews. Meh - it's not a world record or an academy award but it's good enough for me.

~I guess I'm just lucky I picked a thematic so many people seem to enjoy.
I hadn't looked through your gallery/groups until you said that.  If you were looking for advice in your original comment, I'd say you're already spot on with your main group.  At first glance the other groups seem nearly identical though - all muscle related.

~dropped one genre had a lot of people depart angrily
Who was angry, the users following the group or the users submitting artwork?

~Since this isn't Reddit but Deviant Art
Never said it was.  For clarification: I think DA's system could use improvement.  I was part of the alpha testing group devBUG throughout the development of the Groups platform and witnessed the chaos up close.  There was no unified vision, the overarching design changed multiple times, no one worked out how the moderator controls would function until the last moment - I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone on this planet could tell you exactly what every setting in the Back Room does... there are inefficiencies in the design and the execution suffers because of it.  It's nice that you've been able to bring on exceptionally active moderators, however your case is the exception.

~5 years and I'm proud we're about to reach 500k pageviews
And you've averaged one new watcher every-other day.  Like I said, groups hit a steady-state.

I'm a full-privileged Co-Founder of a group that just went Super. How do I upload an installable skin to the Journal? I clicked the browse button of the new blog entry window, selected a skin and it installed to my user account (not core) instead of the group. Thanks

parallellogic In reply to GraphicLia [2016-07-10 03:47:11 +0000 UTC]

The "browse" function just used to populate the "header", "body" and "footer" sections of the "Extras" tab.  If you are having trouble installing a skin, it may be better to copy-paste the css code directly to those text boxes to ensure the skin is applied to the group journal.

File a help desk ticket.  Only a staff can promote you to the Founder role now, but I believe they have promoted users before under similar circumstances.

Easiest way to check is to go to your group's profile page and select the second drop down "Group Info".  There should be a pencil icon at the top right of the drop down that you can click to enable editing of those sections.
