Description
Literature Gallery: Chapters and Annotation Assignment
A brief sketch for an idea I had not long ago for the lit community.
I didn't go into anything on the submission side. More or less this is the presentation side one would see as they click on a Lit deviation.
I'm sure most of you don't know that I actually came to deviantART as a writer. It took a few years before I fell into what I'm doing here, now.
I've been meaning to re-upload some of my older work, and it occurred to me as I thought about doing so how entirely in need of help that whole process really is.
I hope this one is actually considered seriously. It could really improve our Lit system by leaps and bounds... and make it FUN to read again!!!
As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

wows! excellent idea!!That would be so handy as well, just to be able to browse through chapters etc. I really hope DA takes notice and adds it!!

wow, very awesome idea! congrats on DD!
I'm very sure that's pretty freaking useful for writers. It makes me wanna write the story or literature.
More improvements and new development yeah! Plus less time consuming! (that system is almost like a web book yet it's easier and simple -i guess )
I can't wait to see that new system!

Oh I know what you mean. I can hardly wait to see if it'll get picked up. Of course, i might never know until it happens, but it would still rock.
thanks for the support and praise!

I can definitely see some benefits to this system, despite my disdain for tabs in general (I refuse to use them on browsers, they just irritate me). Of course, having all chapters together in one submission would mean people were favouriting all or nothing. It'd also mean I'd lose a lot from my fave-count.
That aside, it would save me from having to use "index journals" to keep track of all my chapters and the annotation capability could be useful for those who want to point out specific things or do full and serious critiques.
It would be best if there was some way of indicating when each chapter was added, though, to keep track of progress on novels and other multi-part pieces. And, of course, it would have to automatically register as a new submission to watchers and appear in DA's "new submissions" category as well.
That's my two cents, at least. Good luck with the project!

I think you're the first person I've ever encountered who doesn't like tabs! You prefer just using multiple windows?
And I see the conundrum with losing your "overall" number of faves, however, I know for myself as a writer it would make me feel better to know I'm getting a more accurate look at how well my work as a whole is being received. Faves are great and all (they do mean a lot), but more important to me is the amount of people who are actually interested in viewing the entire work. And if as time goes long and the piece continues to be updated over time, a truer count of end-results would show.
Say someone didn't like how the book went and Un-faved it due to some particular thing. now THAT would be interesting.
And definitely I hear you on the indexing. Making all of those cross-links is a huge, tiresome pain in the ass.
Yesss, and I agree. Something along the lines of:
"Chapter #?, Title of Work by *Treyos "
And then clicking on it would bring you to the work with that chapter open.

Yeah, I'd rather just have them all listed out on the task bar. I find them easier to navigate that way and I'll also open two side-by-side sometimes, depending on what I'm doing. I usually only have a few things open at once anyway (not like my IRC days when I had... er... lots open ).
Anyway, loss of favourites aside, I'd definitely support this idea. If nothing else, the annotations would be sufficient to know which individual chapters people liked best. For my literary work, I'd much rather get a comment that a fave anyway, as the feedback can be very helpful.
And, yeah, I could totally see some people screaming "I can't believe you killed X!! I loved him! I hate your stupid book! I hope you die!" and removing the favourite.

Would save me from coding Story beginning - Previous chapter - Next chapter under each submission. So far I keep doing this, but I'm one of the few who do. Okay, so with collections it's a tad bit easier for those of us (writers) who bother to keep their stuff in one folder and in order, but to too many it's an unknown thing and still pretty damn annoying if you're trying to publish or read something novel length...
I want this thing and I want it nao!!!

That is absolutely fucking excellent concept work mate. Really really hope this gets seriously discussed around the place, as it would be an excellent addition to the ability for people to interact more easily with the lit around here.

Great stuff...
Being able to add chapters, keeping the whole thing as one solid submission rather than posting chapters of the same story would be excellent, and can really transform someone's literature page into something dynamic, which is what we want in this sort of environment.

Oh geez, I so almost fell out of my seat. I draw most of the time, but I've always wanted to start a story and put it up online, and since I've gotten to deviantart, it's been amazing, but I've never found a site that would let me upload things, and have me WANT to upload literature, because it's very confusing to both the author and reader the way we have it now, and I've been trying to think of ways to organize it.
But this is truly amazing, and I'd be very ashamed if this wasn't at least thought through Oh, and I read you're profile, and go Ohio! Haha

I agree entirely! You basically said everything I was thinking when the idea occurred to me.
And I'm sure that "chapters" aren't any kind of new idea, per se... but I think Chapters & Annotations would be the right dynamic needed to blow the doors wide open for the Lit community.
