When I was a young Jessmonkey, I latched onto tales of probable speculation and imagination. The first book I read in this vein was called The Twenty-One Balloons. It was the tale of a retired schoolteacher who wanted to travel the world and did so in a huge balloon basket house. However, the schoolteacher’s journey went awry, and he became stranded on the island of Krakatoa.

The story fascinated me because the author had depicted a utopia consisting of an international society of intelligent and incredibly inventive people who had settled into a charming life. My taste buds salivated over all the world cuisine that was prepared by each family for a month. Since twenty-one families resided there, the Krakatoan calendar ran for twenty-one months.

Aside from the mouth-watering dishes, the inventions and architectural style of each household were marvels. They even had an ingenious way to escape the island should an emergency or natural disaster happen. And sadly, if you are familiar with the history of great natural disasters, you probably guessed that these families had to implement their escape plan during the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa.

A bit later in my adolescence, Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde followed. And before high school, my mind had already witnessed the miracles and tragedies from Dr. Victor Frankenstein’s laboratory.

All these experiences led to the present day with this photo taken of me at a steampunk convention. This time machine's design, so I was told, was inspired by the 1960 film The Time Machine based on H.G. Wells' phenomenal work of the same name. I decided to share this photo with you all, along with some reflections about time travel, before I leave DeviantArt and head off into the future for different adventures.

I have no inclination to travel back to my past and change anything because my conviction is that everything, both the good and the bad, created the person and the path where I find myself today. My belief in the butterfly effect prevents me from going back to “fix” my regrets or unfortunate circumstances. The reason being is that doing so could have resulted in never having met any of you. That indeed would be a regret that oceans and oceans of time could never erase.
