I have known Ali for about eight years now.
I have seen her go through many different phases in her life. The time she had rainbow hair. The time she wore thick, black eyeliner every day. The time she would never go out in public without socks. The time she wore mismatched clothes on purpose; these were just ways of showing off her personality. My favorite thing about Ali is that she isn't afraid to be herself. Ali has never been afraid to wear something because other people may not like it. She has never been afraid to express her opinion. She has never been afraid to just be herself.

When I found out that she was pregnant, I knew that her baby (whatever the gender) would be very lucky to have a mom that would let them express themselves whatever way they wanted to (as long as it's safe, of course). Ali was convinced that she was having a girl. I on the other hand, had a feeling it was a boy. It didn't matter to her either way - she would love her baby regardless of gender, and last September she gave birth to her baby boy, and named him Skyler.

Skyler is a beautiful baby, and I already see so much of Ali in him. His smile, his expressions, and even how loud he is (which is very, very loud). A couple months ago, Ali and I went to the park to take some photographs of her and Skyler together. It was very impromptu and both Mommy and baby were dressed casually - as if they were just spending a day at the park. I never asked her to pose, rather, I interacted with both of them and just tried to catch them being natural.

This is one of the shots I took of a mother just loving her son. No posing, nothing planned - just pure love.
