Description
“As part of our basic training we were given rifle drill. The human-shaped targets we had on the range were meant to break the reservations most recruits had about shooting at people, and over time these disappeared – we aimed and fired without a thought. In practice the battles we fought were much different. We rarely used the XR-9s we carried in our vehicles, though they gave us much-needed authority over civilians in occupied zones. Our robots dealt with hostiles, and most firefights took place at long range. We came to know the enemy not as soldiers like ourselves, but as the charred remains of men entombed in gutted vehicles. Some of us were thoroughly sickened, but I far preferred them dead.
My attitudes changed late in the day, when one of our Vipers knocked out an enemy MBT. Three of its four crew got out before its ammunition blew, only to be halted by the Viper’s paired flechette rifles. As they trudged towards our convoy, bloody and demoralised, it seemed that men like them – and me – were mere slaves to our war machines…”

I wasn't thinking "Keith Thompson" when I started this one, though I've been a big fan of his work for years. The influence is strongest in my occult creatures and necromechanics galleries.

JFlaxMan, your art is just perfect. Would you take any suggestions, ideas, or such? The Scorched Earth collection, we could find a use for any of those entries, they are just fantastic. But if you do take suggestions for things to draw- unless you are against that. Have you seen the other cards we made with your work yet?

Thanks! I've been following your updates and I like the way this project's going. Feel free to use any images from "Scorched Earth." I should be adding to this gallery a lot over the next few months as I've spent much of 2012 drawing character and vehicle concepts. The series has evolved over time - I've been moving away from more extreme sci-fi elements (humanoid robots, advanced AI) and more towards a darker, grungier aesthetic inspired more by real-world or near-future technology.
Right now I've got a lot of requests to cover, including a major work that will probably keep me busy for most of next week. After that I'm up for suggestions (and have a few of my own!) though this isn't the place to discuss them in depth. I'll send a message via "notes."
Left to my own devices I'll be posting a ruined city, VTOL drone, ground attack aircraft and eight-engined ekranoplane in the days and weeks to come, assuming I'm not sidetracked with commissions or allegorical work. Thanks for this opportunity, it's very much appreciated!

I like this, it's a somber look at the future of war.
