Description

Though many doomsayers imagined a dystopian future under one world government, none predicted the old institutions would fall to the Global Gamers’ Union. This almost bloodless revolution was in hindsight not surprising. The greatest gaming franchises had already transcended national and cultural boundaries; and when playing in a team, people from all kinds of backgrounds were united by a common goal. In the eyes of many gamers, characters and mascots were more real than their parents’ gods and their exploits more exciting than stories from an age long gone. Respect and loyalty to others was now based less on race and class than their individual merits and ability to work in a team. The dystopian nightmare never ensued; the world under the GGU was a richer, fairer, safer one, ignoring the virtual carnage of wars now fought in cyberspace.

As old borders grew less relevant new ones came to matter more. This process was rarely violent – refugees from any group had little trouble finding others – but more dangerous schisms appeared within certain franchises. Unlike such longstanding feuds as Call of Duty vs. Battlefield  –  which, for all their savagery, rarely left the Internet – these internal conflicts spilled out into the real world.

The massive Sonic fanbase – which already suffered from deep rifts due to a convoluted canon and opinionated followers – was affected worst of all. Purists and revisionists, fundamentalists and heretics, sectarian and ecumenical groups fought with medieval savagery over minor differences in supposedly infallible but often contradictory lore. As outsiders watched in disbelief, the minority of Sonic fans who still showed signs of sanity tried to win the franchise back from extremists. In a desperate bid to save it, they abandoned everything except its central character, believing only Sonic could end these pointless and destructive wars. Even this was problematic, as Sonic himself had changed over time and his different incarnations made divisions even worse.

The Sonic Reformers’ final solution was a mere shell of the famous hedgehog, but one they said was necessary. As countless lives had already been lost over opinions of Sonic’s arms – which some traditions said were blue and others said were flesh-coloured – the Reformers avoided the issue by removing his arms altogether, though his white gloves were retained. Due to the potential for a schism based on leg colour they removed his lower limbs as well. The old problem of Sonic’s eyes – best expressed in the question “How do they work?” – had historically provoked less violence than inconclusive speculation, but the Reformers solved it the same way. The sole supporting character was a balloon called Helium, who spoke a high-pitched gibberish that could never contradict the statements their new Sonic made. When they unveiled their creation they were certain it would heal all wounds, eliminate all differences, and unite all Sonic fans.

Few actions have gone so disastrously wrong. Some people warmed to the new Sonic but the majority did not. The “Shell,” as it was derisively known, fostered new divisions among those who could afford no more. The resulting purges and reprisals were bloody but predictable. Most of the Sonic Reformers paid for their ideals with martyrdom, but few mistakes can be unmade and their infamous spawn lives on.

Sadly this sounds like the state of religion and politics today. Mayhap if we remove the human scourge from the equation all will become better?

Stupid enough to think that people here would be adult enough not to run around asking how stupid people could be for their thoughts, apparently.

Thanks for that.

Have a nice day.

You thought right, because ever since Sonic Colors, the series has turned into this monstrous mishmash of nonsense that tries to hard to appeal to the masses.

It's been a while since we last saw a good Sonic game.

So many lives lost in the Sonic wars. And the browser wars, and the social networking wars. Lots of furry pogroms and daily raids. The Internet is a dangerous, hostile wasteland, and humankind would do well in learning its lesson through with the Sonic wars. But war, war never changes.

You had me at "furry pogroms." This would make a great comic/animated series (though I'd like to see it realised by a world-class creative team!)

Unfortunately, not many fans agree on the same things, and what the "Sonic Reformers" are depicting in the picture is abnormally true on fighting over of like "why should he look like that?"or "why don't they ever fix..." or something else. Though, seeing as I am a Sonic fan, but seeing in this kind of perspective, it's true sadly, and if everyone had their way with him, the Sonic on here would more likely would be the result.

Poor Sonic.  Someone really should just put him out of his misery. When he's not being dropped into despicable games like Sonic Freeriders, Sega is pimping him out to Nintendo for Super Smash Brothers or to Microsoft for marketing materials.  Or maybe a mercy kill is going too far and it would be better if he went under the rock where Crash Bandicoot has been living since circa 2001.

It's sad to think that in the early 90s, he was the near-equal of Mario and starred in some of the greatest games ever made.  Granted, that was only a spark in the darkness.  Then came some real dreck like Sonic R and Sonic's Labyrinth.

The story goes that Sonic was originally meant to show off the Megadrive/Genesis system's speed (the one thing it had on the Super Nintendo). This gimmick died with 16-bit and it's been interesting to see the many different paths the franchise has struck out on since, even if they've been dead ends.

True fans can take pride in the fact Sonic did compete with Mario (and did a damn good job of it). These days I'm content to follow the online dramas and laugh.

QuebecoisWolf In reply to jflaxman [2015-02-25 02:22:16 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know that Sonic came into being to show off the 16 BIT Genesis (twice as many bits as the puny NES) and its almighty BLAST PROCESSING!  What's a bit?  What's BLAST PROCESSING?  Hell if I know, but it was why the Genesis was better than anything Ninetendo made!  And it was even better when you dropped a 32x on top of it!  And I almost forgot about the Sega CD!

Actually... I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the vast majority of Sonic fanboys have never heard of the Sega CD and 32x, even if they were two giant stumbling blocks that brought about Sega's decline.  I think that they represented more than bad investments, they created a company-wide inferiority complex.  Sega seems to keep making Sonic games with completely different gameplay because they're afraid of making new characters and don't think that their games will sell unless Sonic is on the cover.  And the sad thing is that they're probably right... who the hell would have ever paid money for Sonic Free Riders if it didn't have Sonic?

Though I've been wanting to get a Sega CD since I've heard that Sonic CD is perhaps the best Sonic game ever made.

The trouble is that early CD consoles haven't survived the years very well.

Sonic has sure seen better days. Seems like the changes made by the Reformers didn't find the solution and only opened up a new bloody chapter in the fanbase's conflicts. I guess that's why they say, "The path to Hell is paved with good intentions."

I love the feeling of completely drained lifelessness about Sonic in this piece. It certainly does well to vividly convey the unfortunate state the Sonic franchise has been left in. I've played very few Sonic games and watched a few Let's Plays of a more infamous game in the franchise from time to time, but I've never been all that bothered with Sonic altogether since to me, it has very little to offer in terms of storytelling other than "Sonic can run fast! He has friends! And there's bad guys!"

Also, I presume the whole "Sonic's arms aren't blue!" thing came from the fanbase's infantile reactions to Sonic Boom's design of the character.
