Description I'm trying to learn some techniques on how to create visually appealing maps. This is the "raw map", showing the general geography. This was created with Inkscape , an Open Source, vector-based graphics program. I plan to use GIMP , another Open Source program (roughly the equivalent of Photoshop) to enhance this raw image and to make a good-looking map - but I could use some advice on doing so. I'm especially interested in application of filters and special effects instead of manually adding individual lines - I plan to create more maps in the future, and knowing some relatively quick ways of improving such line maps could save me a lot of time and effort if the results are pleasing.

Warning, large image!

If you want to help me out and experiment with such techniques, you can find the individual layers of the map here , here and here , so that you can apply special effects to them separately. I hope to hear your advice soon!

Oh, and if you want to learn more about Tempest, the world this map is based on, go here . It's a community-based Wiki effort, so anyone is welcome to join in and contribute!
