Description I'm currently trying to create some good-looking maps for Urbis , a fantasy setting I am developing. And since I could use some help with the details, I thought I'd putthem here for comments.

So far, I've created the major topographical features - oceans, lakes, mountains and rivers. Next I'll create details on the vegetation. But if anyone has any suggestions for the parts I have already done, I am all ears!

I've created the base lines with Inkscape, and then applied a variety of filtering effects with GIMP.

In my opinion: Your water is too blue, add in some green/black/deep blue colors. Put some swampy water in too. Rivers usually flow downhill from something, either a forest, spring, mountain, etc. be sure all of your rivers are flowing from somewhere. Your mountains, as drawn, are too symmetrical - they look more like plants in my opinion. Try making them as random as possible and also vary them in width of peaks.

Those are just some suggestions off the top of my head. Hope they help. SMS14 had a good idea too, looking at Google maps.

Good luck.

Thanks - I'll have to think about how I can do that with filters.
