Description

I started a joke which started the whole world crying
But I didn't see that the joke was on me, oh no
I started to cry which started the whole world laughing
Oh If I'd only seen that the joke was on me

I looked at the skies running my hands over my eyes
And I fell out of bed hurting my head from things that I said
'Till I finally died which started the whole world living
Oh if I'd only seen that the joke was on me

I looked at the skies running my hands over my eyes
And I fell out of bed hurting my head from things that I said
'Till I finally died which started the whole world living
Oh if I'd only seen that the joke was on me
Oh no, that the joke was on me.

(Bee Gees - I started a joke)

My favourite version of the song isΒ  This one by the Pet Shop Boys, which inspired me to draw this picture of Pegasus J. Crawford, creator of Duel Monsters and the effective starter of that joke.
The entire precedent and inspiration for Pegasus' actions was his wife's death (a sad event), which resulted in him creating Duel Monsters, a fun pastime (which made the whole world laugh), only then for him to take that again and turn it against the protagonists (and effectively 'make them cry').
I like villains that are layered like that, which is probably the reason why I Started A Joke was adapted for the Suicide Squad movie which is scheduled to come out this summer.

As an antagonist, he was very charismatic, and since he's changed sides now to sorta-neutral, I like him even more. He's like this amiable uncle-type (despite still being very young as I recall), with an eccentric side. I imagine him to prank the Yugi-tachi (and Kaiba) on a regular basis and get them into all sorts of trouble. But at the same time there is this big loss that he never got over, and a deep sadness that results from that, which he often covers up. I've read (on Tumblr) I think that one reason that Pegasus likes the toon monsters so much is because they can't die (unlike real people, like his wife). There. Now I've made myself sad again.

So yeah, I do like him.

I would've put him at 35 (and he still is, in my head).
