Description Name: Michel
Origin: France
Fighting style: Savate
Design notes: Savate is another "national" fighting style that hasn't seen much representation despite a fair amount of French characters. Definitely the design I'm the least happy with at this point, he's way too plain and it seems like every one of my characters wear the same colours...

Why not have a spaniard use savate?

Feels like you could've given him a combination of military (combat or formal), luxury (suit or high class), or casual (jeans, t-shirt, hoodie) wear instead, but what we have isn't too bad.

I like the idea of a Savate user in a fighting game, but I agree that he's too plain. This seems like an alternative, hidden outfit more than the default one.

Meh that you don't find him all that interesting, if you can list someone awesome as a voice actor and give him a unique moveset, then he'll definitely stand out.  I try not put down the "normal" looking character anymore when it comes to a fighting game, they can actually improve the roster with their mere presence in some cases.  I mean, look at Sagat....  Plain as fuck, even though he's iconic.... and he's totally NOT representative of what someone from Thailand looks like.

Of course there's more to a character than what they're wearing, and there's nothing wrong with simplicity. But I wasn't happy with this picture because I felt it doesn't really communicate what I did have in mind. In some ways, but not in others. But frankly the real issue is that I didn't quite have as strong of an idea for this character as I did for others, and I think that shines through. That's fine though, either I'll be able to refine this concept into something I'm happier with, or abandon it in favour of something better.

Your least favourite? He's awesome!
Not just because I love savate (the only one martial art I've ever learned and practiced) but also for the way you perfectly recreated the immediate feel of the classic savateur: you look at him and you know straight away who he is and how he fights... In a Joe Higashi kind of way. Brilliant.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it, it's especially nice to hear from someone who surely knows Savate better than I do. The problem for me is that there is nothing else to his design, or his character. I had some ideas about his character or personality but don't feel I was able to get them across through the design, that's why I was unhappy with it. I still like the idea of an orthodox Savate user just because it's unusual, but at the same time I don't want something too boring. I have some ideas for other directions to take the character too, after all this is basically a first draft.

That's for sure, early drafts tend to change quite dramatically by the end of the whole creative process. Still, I'm 100% in for the 'bland' look if the result - as the guy above said - is so iconic.
That said, buddy, the whole project is amazing, can't wait to see more about it (stages, game-graphics mockups...).
