Description UPDATE, March 11, 2013: Uploaded new file with current watermarks.

I have included a black border to denote this piece's 'museum' status.

These are the first page and inner front cover of my 2007-2008 Brainsick sketchbook. Originally, this page had been lightly drawn studies of hummingbirds.... But I erased them and began another one of my Scribbly Marker-Micron-White out-Gel pen Word-and-Picture Collages. Oh, the madness!

The text above Paranoid's head is from Chapter Two. Pictured 'gods' are the Snake God, the Great Stag, and Decay. The little rat near the bottom is Vex.

Drawn May 4-7, 2007 (right side) and May 25, 2007 (left side). Prismacolor markers (all Black), Microns, white out, and white gel pen.

Ecce canius - insanus ("Behold the dog - insane") is a nod to a line from Stephen King's Cell.

"Mercy In You" lyrics © Depeche Mode
"My Shadow In Vain" lyrics © Gary Numan / Tubeway Army

*grin* I'm glad Paranoid is so well-liked!

I'm in the process of FINALLY wrapping up Chapter Four, so there'll be some Paranoid to read soon, hopefully!

@_@ WOAH I'm so glad ye re-uploaded this, as it's - WOW. WOW. Yer detail always just amazes me, and it's like - shades of the Shout It Out project, sort of, and... WOW. (Sorry, I'm incredibly tired and incoherent right now, but I LIKES! <3) I can TOTALLY BELIEVE HE'S PARANOID. Ye captured that unbalanced-ness REALLY WELL. 0_0 Great job.

Thank you as always, Sylver! Speaking of the Shout It Out project, I actually did my own as a fun, personal distraction from college work (bad me!), soooo I maaaay upload it here eventually. It was a TON of fun to put together, especially in the sense of trying to develop a sense of graphic design.

Squee, I'm so glad that Paranoid's madness shows in these pages. <3 I'm addicted to marker-pen-white out art!

OH wow, that sounds COOL, yer shout it out thingy! I loved that project. :3 And I bet yers will be really cool! (I should do another one. I have far to much to shout out for one deviation.)

I've been thinking of making my own project - asking people what they WANT. Out of life, at that moment, eventually, whatever - and they can write a poem or do an image or a photo or anything, and I figure a lot of people might want to do it, 'cause who doesn't want to be artsy about something they want the most? I'm just thinking about it - think it sounds like a cool idea, or dumb?

Oh goodness, no, your project idea is not dumb in the least! On the contrary, it sounds refreshing and captivating. I'd be up for it like WHOA. One hundred percent. It'd be a fantastic outlet for creativity and expression!

Oh, I love this!!! -has just noticed Paranoid is a border collie -

Poor Paranoid, has such mental distress, worse I think..

I still write material like this, if you look at some of my writing in my gallery.. Mostly philosophical..

I bet Paranoid wouldn't be so insane if he wasn't in a labratory TT-TT

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JillianLambertArt In reply to NightReaper01 [2008-06-24 20:01:37 +0000 UTC]

*grin* Paranoid is a husky-beagle cross, but he does look rather similar to a border collie.

Oh cool, I'll have to check out your writing! I've got a LOT of catching up to do when it comes to reading my friends' works; I need to return the favor of commenting and making suggestions.

Yeah, poor little guy.... Paranoid's hallucinations are born from a variety of causes, I think (something I need to decide on, anyway), but his being in a laboratory sure doesn't help.

Blarg! DX!! Ah well, I'm battling art-blocks to and fro, here and there X_X art-blocks kill me!!! It's only when I see my art has imprved that I can actually defeat art-blocks XD

Oh gosh, I know the feeling! A few years ago, I'd get in massive art blocks because I went through "I love my art but I hate my art" type moods. They're never fun. D:

I just bought a Depeche Mode cd, and only got to listen to the first song before I dropped my car off at the shop. >_< I have to wait to finish listening to it until tomorrow when I pick it up so I can listen to the rest... I really liked the first song. I have no idea what it was called or even what album it was. I got it for a dollar at a yard sale. XD

I love your splash pages. ^_^

JillianLambertArt In reply to Goover [2008-06-20 06:59:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh, now you've got me curious as to which album it is! Aaah I love Depeche Mode. Hurray for finding one of their albums for a dollar at a yard sale!

Oh hells yeah, their song "Home" just began playing in my music library. Beautiful, heartfelt song. <3

Thank you, Erin! I think I might update this splash page to the two-page view I made with its companion piece....

Goover In reply to JillianLambertArt [2008-07-15 05:40:38 +0000 UTC]

The album is Keeping Up With Depeche Mode. It's so wonderfully 80's, then this one song, "Somebody", comes on, and I was floored. It's an incredible song and nothing like anything else on the CD. For one, it's a love song, and the lyrics are amazing. (Not that the rest of the lyrics aren't amazing. XD) I had Giusti listen to it, and he really enjoys playing Name that Tune because he always wins and I always lose, and he had NO IDEA who it was. I told him, and he said "No way! This sounds nothing like anything I've ever heard from Depeche Mode!" I told him that's because everything else he had heard was incredibly 80's synth.

Lovely CD. ^_^ I think it may be one of their earlier ones, but really I have no idea. O_o I do know it's an original CD when that album first came out on CD. And I got it for a dollar.

JillianLambertArt In reply to Goover [2008-07-16 06:15:36 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes! That's a good collection to start with. It gathers up a few songs from their earliest albums.

"Somebody" is originally from Some Great Reward, their fourth (1984) album. *dorking out over D-Mode* If you haven't heard these songs, "Blasphemous Rumours" and "Stories of Old" (from the same album) are also stunning. Martin Gore, who sings in "Somebody", has an incredible talent for writing song lyrics. Just... WOW.

D-Mode's early work was so fabulously 80s synth. That's why I fell in love with 'em!

Goover In reply to JillianLambertArt [2008-07-21 08:02:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh!! Those songs ARE good!! I really like the whole album, and I've been looking for more every time I go anywhere that sells CDs. ^__^

80's synth kicks some serious ass. <3

Oh, silhouettes are so much fun! I love picking out areas in them with white gel pen - makes for a neat, stark look, eh? Symbolism is huge for Paranoid. Thank you as always, Syxx!

This is amazing. I love the intensity of the whole thing -- crazy, stylized shadows and scrawled phrases always add together for a feeling that is signature to Brainsick.
I think I'm going to take inspiration from this and make a Brainsick-esque page in my sketchbook. All I need is one of those nifty white-out gel pens.

JillianLambertArt In reply to eveh [2007-05-12 06:26:17 +0000 UTC]

That is wonderfully ironic, because I have a sketch of one of your characters in my 'Fantasy - Macabre - Trades - Gifts - Studies' sketchbook.... I so look forward to seeing your Brainsick-esque page!

White gel pens are fantastic for small corrections and for adding that weird aesthetic to drawings.

OH, and before I forget, I just finished Stephen King's Cell. I've always disliked cell phones, but damn. Fantastic book.

eveh In reply to JillianLambertArt [2007-05-12 21:56:29 +0000 UTC]

Haha! Really? You do? Because I'm 80% sure that I have a doodle of Depravity in my sketchbook titled Overintellectualization. I also found another page I did about 1 year ago that was inspired by your Hallucinatory Apex, I believe.
I glanced through my scan folder and I found it, but it's a terrible scan. Everything's washed out. I'll rescan it later.

Cell would have to be one of my favorite King books. He's very lovely at creating that delicious post-apocalyptic feel, isn't he? The end nearly made me cry, though. It just.... stops. In mid-sentence. Typical of Stephen King, yes, but I really was hoping to find out what happened.

JillianLambertArt In reply to eveh [2007-05-12 23:46:10 +0000 UTC]

My sketches are of Sheila. I LOVE her face and really wanted to draw her, so I did. Oh, and Depravity! My goodness, it seems he's rather well-loved. Awesome. Hallucinatory Apex is three years old now, so I may redraw it in the future sometime - perhaps when I can get my hands on some India ink and a fountain pen.

Delicious, scrumptious, and all synonyms describe Cell perfectly. Throw in some holy shit, and there you have it. The ending made me sad as well; you're dying to know what happens next, but can only imagine it.
