Description
Figured I might as well upload something, seeing that the end of the term is fast approaching and I'm eager to show some new work. This is the first part of my Character & Object Design final, the character illustration. Chagrin was created for an imagined cartoon series / film called 'Missing'; her role in the story is that of the monster. She is the guardian and pet of the villain in the story (I might show the other characters later), but does not fit the role of a monster well. Chagrin is defensive and shy, quicker to run away than she is to fight, and is very intelligent and sensitive. She is a feline-primate chimera - think tiger mixed with mandrill.
Inked with the Hunt #102 crow quill dip pen and India ink, then colored with Derwent Inktense pencils (wet). Re-inked after the colors dried. Many references of big cats and mandrills (and baboons) were used for her pose and features.
I will eventually upload the process scans for this piece. The original has a large purple swoosh shape to Chagrin's left; I was on a complementary color kick and felt the background needed some added flair. Just remember that "added flair" is not always needed! *grin*
WIP scans: Chagrin: Progress Scans
Chagrin belongs to me.

This monster reminds me a lot of the Japanese monster the Nue

The Nue is an awesome beast; I had seen the Wikipedia article on it a few years ago, so its design may have played a role in inspiring Chagrin's design.

The purple fog is gone! haha! I understand why Za didn't want it, but I still thought it looked cool.

Aww, thanks, David! The purple fog is staring at me from the original... which is sitting atop my desk at the moment. Hee!

Hybrid type animals are cool: who would have thought that a mandrill would work so well with a tiger? Those pencil colours you used sure live up to their name: the colours are very intense.

Drawing hybrid animals is one of the creative loves of my life; I also love searching them online, both real and fantasy. Oooh and Derwent Inktense are incredibly fun to use! Similar to watercolors, but somewhat easier to control, in my experience.

You got rid of the purple swirly! She looks better without it. Chagrin is cute. ^^

*grin* I agree. Purple swirlies do not always improve your illustrations, ha! Thanks, Hannah.

I must admit, this is a really cool character concept. Simple, but it's really unique.

OMG ART YAY!
I love the lineart on this; it's nice and clean. Also the design is awesome <3 all the colors go with each other well! Oh and I'd like to add; I love the position and view of the pose, I have yet to achieve such a thing

Aww, thanks as always, NightReaper! I used a lot of references for the pose: my main reference was of a serval in a crouch, its teeth bared. I just flipped the pose for Chagrin and drew her with her belly closer to the ground, and with her front paws spread further apart.
Hmmm, I should mention my use of references in my description!

sounds like a good idea

Cool. I really like the design of the paw/feet/hands, especially the back ones.
It's good to see you posting art again. ^-^

Thank you, Kile! Her back feet were fun to design; a cat-monkey mix is something I'd never drawn before, so her paw-feet were new as well. *grin* I like her oversized dewclaw-thumbs, too! (Lordy, lookit all 'em hyphenated phrases!)

Ha, ha. I can see the oh-so-subtle gender correction! 8D
But, it's true that something with that much life in it is most certainly not an "it". <3

My teacher, Za, and my classmates kept referring to her as male. Understandable, though, since she does look quite masculine. Chagrin says "Screw you!" to gender stereotyping!
Aww, thanks again. She is very lively, eh?
