Description
[ Moved to Scraps September 13, 2005 ]Drawn after finishing Dean Koontz's Watchers for the first time. For those who haven't read it, Watchers is a superb thriller - the first Koontz book I've read - and its suspense was enough to make me finish the thing in almost one sitting: Saturday evening to Sunday morning. I went to bed at 6:31 AM with bloodshot eyes.
These are a couple concepts for how I see The Outsider, a hybrid monster created from recombinant DNA research and experimentation. I don't want to give any spoilers, but... I suppose posting this is sort of like a spoiler itself, for anyone interested in reading the book. Of course, The Outsider's appearance is really subject to the reader's imagination and how he or she envisions Koontz's details. I am quite fond of the black, scribbly version at the bottom of the page; I'd like to draw it again on a larger piece of paper.
Baboons are awesome. The profile is that of a hamadryas baboon; the skull is of a male chacma baboon. Look at them TEETH!
Watchers and The Outsider Β© Dean Koontz.

Love it! Mine invisioning of it made it mave thicker legs and for some reason a tail that went down to its knees hah But god I loved the Outsider, so sad "Tear out your eyes"
You want to tear out my eyes?
"Tear out everyones eyes"
Why?
"So cant see me"
Why dont you want to be seen?
"Ugly"
You think your ugly?
"Much Ugly"
Ah that part is stuck in my head! I finished the book and still I remember that and at the end "Kill dog, kill dog" How I wish I could hold The Outsider and tell him I would care for him

Aww, thanks! The Outsider is my FAVORITE monster of all the books I've read and movies I've seen. I'd considered giving it a tail at one point as well. Makes me want to go back and try some different designs.
Oh I know, the poor thing is so vicious, yet eerily sympathetic. I'm a sucker for sympathetic monsters. <3

Yes, I haven't been able to get my hands on too many Koontz books, but I've read a couple others. Nothing quite compares to watchers though.
Would you mind if I used some of your Outsider concepts in some of my own pieces, giving you credit of course? I've been looking for a good representation of The Outsider for a long time, but the best I can come up with are the Balverines from "Fable" and this couldn't be a better representation. If not, I completely understand. If yes, and it turns out you really hate what I've done with it, I will remove it.

JillianLambertArt In reply to sonikuu [2008-01-24 07:02:48 +0000 UTC]
Watchers is definitely hard to beat. I think I've read around eighteen or so of Koontz's novels, but I have maybe eleven or twelve more (that I own) which I haven't read yet. I need to get cracking!
If the pieces are solely for your own, personal purpose, then please go ahead. If you were to use them in, say, a school project (not that that's what you implied), I would decline.

I like the simian aspect to the Outsider (considering it was based on a baboon), but the blisters on its face make it seem like it's got lots of eyes.

I can see your point about the bumps on its head resembling eyes, but the eyes themselves were left unshaded. Koontz described it as having a very lumpy face.

This is an interesting work up of the outsider. This to is a favorite of mine. I like the pose of the lower concept and how you have the cuts on his face from his own claws. I just recently did a work up of the outsider as well if you want to take a look. [link]
Just felt like sharing.

IΒ΄ve probably red that book but I donΒ΄t know itΒ΄s
name in english...
How does this book begin? Is there a woman or
a man running on the beach and he/her gets killed by a doglike monster? If this is what happens then IΒ΄ve red that book.
Anyhow, this pic is hella good! That Outsider is
really creepy looking. 8) Good job!

Sort of; in the beginning, the main character (Travis Cornell) is alone in a canyon when a golden retriever runs towards him, frightened of something following it. Travis doesn't see The Outsider, but he hears noises around him and takes the dog home. It's simply called Watchers in English, though I'm not certain if this title holds true for all English-speaking countries.
Glad you like him! I adore Dean Koontz's books. I hope to make more fanart for The Outsider eventually.

Dean R. Koontz really is so good! :3 I like his books Cold Fire and Dark Falls.

Oh WOW!!!! i really LOVE this! i did some fan art for Watchers too (a pic of the outsider and a pic of Einstein) WATCHERS is my favorite book of all time and your version of the Outsider is amazing, so much like how i imagined it'd look. you got EVERTHING right even the six-inch claws which most people neglect to include. i am in awe! (i can never make the arms look as long as i imagined them but you do a PERFECT job!) you are my hero! X1000(if only i could) love it! It looks beautiful (in my twisted opinion), wow!

SO cool to hear from another Koontz fan! Thank you so very much for your comment and favorite - your Watchers fan art is completely admirable as well! The Outsider is also my favorite monster ever; it's horrific, yet Koontz makes you feel for it, feel sympathy for it despite its savage nature. Thanks again!
π: 0 β©: 1
Mintowolf In reply to JillianLambertArt [2006-08-06 15:38:06 +0000 UTC]
no problem, you deserve it!
yes, i love how Dean Koontz shows two sides to The Outsider. It is something to be feared but also to be pited. It is dangerous and destructive but ashamed of its savagry which it can not change. Because of its hatred for humanity, it cannot serve the purpose for which it was built (genetically engereered warrior) and because of its killing instincts, it can never live peacefully no matter how much it may desire to. it is a creature who will never truely belong anywhere. In the novel, the scene in the barn (its death) often brings tears to my eyes for many reasons.
Again, i love how you have portrayed it! Have you read any other Dean Koontz books?
π: 0 β©: 1
JillianLambertArt In reply to Mintowolf [2006-08-07 19:43:50 +0000 UTC]
Oh, absolutely - the barn scene is so powerful. Another scene that moved me deeply was that in which Lem and the others found The Outsider's lair, and, of course, the scene where The Outsider is talking to Dr. Yarbeck with sign language. As in the book, the themes you mentioned make for an exhilarating read.
I own thirty-one Koontz books so far, but have read about only half of them (my aunt got me obsessed!). I have read Winter Moon, The House of Thunder, The Eyes of Darkness, Dark Rivers of the Heart, Hideaway, Odd Thomas and Forever Odd, Cold Fire, The Bad Place, The Taking, From the Corner of His Eye, and By the Light of the Moon. Er, less than half, then. They're all so addiciting!
π: 0 β©: 1
Mintowolf In reply to JillianLambertArt [2006-08-07 20:09:12 +0000 UTC]
Oh yes, definately, those are also most memorable scenes!
31 Dean Koontz books!? I'm so jealous!
My mom got me obsessed with Mr. Koontz's work (she's read all but 5 of his books) and i own about 10 (if you count "Life is Good" by Trixie Koontz, his dog). i love his novels, though i haven't been able to find one i like better than Watchers. my favorites include MIDNIGHT and LIFE EXPECTANCY. I definately recommend these! Also, The Christopher Snow series is very good (FEAR NOTHING and SEIZE THE NIGHT). i was amused becuase FEAR NOTHING mentions the francis project from WATCHERS

Your mom's read all but five? WOW! Way to go! ^__^ I also have Life Expectancy, but have yet to read it. Same goes for Fear Nothing and Seize the Night - have them, but need to read them.
Cool on that mention of the Francis Project, too! :3

Mintowolf In reply to JillianLambertArt [2006-08-13 18:22:26 +0000 UTC]
yep, she's been reading his books for about 3 years now (i think)
anyways, you definately SHOULD read Life Expectancy and the christopher snow series. life expectancy is unlike alot of his previous books in that it is much more humerous (and he seems to bring alot of humor to thrilling stories already). There was something to grin about on almost every page.
And if you loved Watchers, you will love Fear Nothing and Seize the Night too since they feature many of the same story elements as Watchers did (smart dogs created in labs, hybrid monkey creatures etc. etc.)
Happy Reading!

This is turly admirable work. I read the books several weeks ago, and never expected someone to go so far as to draw The Outsider. I think you captured the horror, yet also the intrigue, of him with overwhelming skill and excruciating detail. I hope you continue to draw other characters from his novels. If you don't mind my asking, which of his books have you read?

Of Koontz's novels, I have read Watchers, Winter Moon, The House of Thunder, The Eyes of Darkness, Dark Rivers of the Heart, By the Light of the Moon, Odd Thomas and Forever Odd, Cold Fire, and The Bad Place - but I have several others I have not read yet. He's such a fantastic writer!

I've been looking FOREVER for Outsider fanart. I must say - this is probably the most accurate I've seen yet.
I read Watchers about a year ago... the first Dean Koontz book I read. Since then, I've read over 50 others, but Watchers remains my favorite.
This is absolutely perfect. The bottom one specifically captures the exact deranged essence of the Outsider... hats off to you, this is truely amazing.

He also did a book called "Shadowfires", originally published under the pen name "Leigh Nichols" . . . the funny part is that I'd read that one years before the nom de plume became public, and it had *reminded* me of Koontz!!
"Phantoms" is also quite good. I enjoyed "Twilight Eyes," although it's not quite on the same level of superb-ness . . . my husband liked "Strangers," although more than I did.
Now I need to go down and root through my Koontz shelf and give you more recommendations

Also just a fine point. I like the layout of the page, the comparison, the combination of baboon head in profile, skull and then the creature. This is the kind of thing I'd love to be able to do for Street Sketching -- okay, well, maybe not in a macabre subject (at least on most of them, I might put just one page on Dark Art as a particular style) but this is a publishable sketchbook page.
Mine never come out that great, there's always something really cool on the page combined with sloppy cheezy botches or it's not laid out well or it gets developed into an entire drawing instead of this kind of cool layout. It's like when I used to have to put more than one person into a street portrait, once I got *one* face in great with the likeness I would really sweat over the additional faces, because botching the last one would mean losing the good ones.
