Description This is my first piece submitted to Deviant so I figured I put my one of my most recent and favorites Matthias. His face, hands and feet are sculpted in Polymer Clay (a clay that bakes hard at low temperature) and he is dressed in assorted leathers and chamois. He is considered by some as an "Art Doll" and is freestanding. His candlestick, candle and flame are real and his hair is "mohair." He stands 11 inches tall. Matthias is entirely hand made (with the exception of his eyes which are glass) including his clothing, and his is poseable.

The details is refined and frankly the face of the little guy is angelic.

One q. Did you ever bake him? How long?

JillWilli In reply to syobe [2004-05-04 23:11:27 +0000 UTC]

Yes, he is baked, actually he's just a head on a wooden spoon, so I plop that into a glass bottle and bake it at 270/300 for 25 or 30 minutes. Same story with the hands and feet... then I put the whole thing (all the pieces) together. You see, the back of his head and his body are just foam (like in your couch) over the spoon handle and armature, so there really isn't as much clay as one might think.
And I put the foam over the armiture of the arms and legs too, so in the end they are still posable even when they are finished.
I'll have to post some pics to explain at some point...
Thanks so much for the compliments, and your interest in my work!

Hmmmmm. I did figure that there were some stuffings made.

Though a spoon is not one I much would expect.

I'm really a newbie in this polymer clay thing.

I love the detail of the fabric. Did you spray cornstarch and water misture on it to harden or glue? It doesn't look like glue because it's not that glossy.

though I like Sujan too the detail on the nails and as well the sooth on the feet

JillWilli In reply to syobe [2004-05-05 03:37:22 +0000 UTC]

Nope, none of that fancy spray stuff LOL... when you pick my guys up they are kinda soft, their clothes all feel like our clothes. I just dirty up the fabrics with a little makeup (never underestimate what you've got lying around the house), in certain areas to help emphasize the folds. I couldn't stiffen the clothing though, it would effect them being pose-able.

A simply lovely piece. The wrinkles on his face and on the joints of his fingers really add character to him, and the fingernails and toenail... beautiful detail.
I especially like that he is holding a candlestick complete with a lit melting candle; the light of the flame reflected in iris of his eye just gives them an additional warm and kind look.

Okay before I say anything,I announce that THIS comment is my 1500th comment, so, erm, congratulations to myself. Aside of that, I want to say that this is a brilliant sculputre and something like this isn't seen everyday here on DA. You can virtually sense the amount of power in this and see how much devotion, time, effort and sweat went into this brilliant work. Well done. Totally favourite.
