UPDATE 10/16/23

Well... I'm a bit late to the punch on this, but I just got done experiencing the DLC for Sonic Frontiers, and now that I've gotten back in the hobby of this DeviantArt reviewing thing I HAVE to talk about it of course... I'm considering making a new template for Games like I did with movies, but I don't wanna do that for Frontiers without fully revisiting the base game first, so I'll just tack my thoughts onto here for nows:

* Most of the same pros and cons from the original game apply here... There are less times the flow is interrupted by 2D Platforming sections (in fact, I don't remember it happening to me AT ALL in the DLC) aside from that the new content is as chill yet rough around the edges as the base experience was.

+ Amy, Knuckles, and especially Tails didn't disappoint! They were all fun to play as, and their abilities were well utilized in the numerous platforming challenges created for them. They were clearly made with the jumping in mind, and most of the stuff from their skill trees revolve around movement and less around combat (PRO TIP: Get the Cyclone with Tails as soon as you can, that thing ALONE makes the game 10x better than it was originally) BTW, each of them have their own theme for the levels, and they're all pretty catchy (especially the Knux theme, that one's gonna be in my head for a while)

+ The challenges in this campaign are Considerably improved from before. They mostly rely around tricky platforming and time trials rather than "pull this obvious switch" which is what I think this series should continue to go for if it sticks with this approach

+ I'll say the "True" Final Boss was a Definite Improvement over the original version. It's more of a challenge, it's packed with a LOT more spectacle... And it actually FEELS like something from a Sonic Game. (My only two gripes were stopping the "healing itself" move shouldn't have been that hard to figure out, and I wish my view wasn't blocked by trees half the time)

- This DLC was criticized for being unfairly difficult, and that can come down to the lack of Checkpoints for certain sections. When playing as Sonic you're required to traverse a bunch of Towers and do a bunch of Trials at the top, and... MY WORD the amount of time you need to go without screwing up is downright maddening... I'm normally all for a challenge, but I can only to the same thing over and over to fall down as a result before I start to lose it! Even when switching to Easy mode which helps you bypass a lot of the obstacles, it's still RIDICULOUS just how LONG these obstacles can go for!

- There's also a Boss Rush before the end of the game, and the moment I realized what I was in for, I started to feel sick... THREE TITANS... NO CHECKPOINTS... AND YOU CAN'T HEAL RINGS... And once again this was on EASY MODE (on Normal or Difficult, you had to get PERFECT PARRIES too!) I'll say this: It felt good to pull off-and the Knight wasn't actually annoying as I remember it being-but MAN I wish this could've been optional...

- I'm also noticing the camera isn't much help a lot of the time. I constantly have to manually point it to things which isn't easy to do while tightrope platforming around the Empire State Building! Remember when the camera used to just... automatically focus on objects of interest? BESIDES THE SQUID OF COURSE...

And those were my biggest takeaways... I'd still call this a 7/10 Game all things considered. If the next 3D Sonic Game can be Exactly This except WITHOUT the Parts that Bothered Me, then it might be the one to finally dethrone Sonic Adventure as my favorite of the 3D Games.

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION 11/15/22

"Aw... [MEMES] Here we go again!"

I REALLY... Thought... I was DONE with this whole "Quick Review" thing and that Freedom Planet 2 would be "the One Time" I come out of retirement or whatever, but with the amount of discourse surrounding this game-some praising it, others criticizing a lot of aspects about it-I feel I just HAD to throw my hat into the ring... NO PUN INTENDED...

So this is where I stand with the new Sonic Frontiers. I can definitely see where a lot of the issues come in-and unfortunately some people's worst fears came true from the initial marketing-but most of my time with the game has been pretty chill. If you're able to overlook some stuff, I'd say go for it.

Also if it wasn't already apparent, I played the SWITCH Version which is usually the less preferable way to experience Big Budget games, but I still found the game playable so make of that what you will...

ONE MORE THING FOR CONS: While I appreciate Tails, Knuckles, and Amy being heavily involved in the Story, I WISH you could be able to play as them again... An "Open Zone" Sonic Game like this is BEGGING to be experienced with characters that have variable methods of movement.
