Professor Anton Veeblefitzer, the demonically possessed designer for Deutschland,
who celebrates Octoberfest all year-long (Burrr-r-p!), got a peek at the Dornier Do-335
Arrow tandem-engine heavy fighter blueprints early in the war.
Impressed, PAV quickly cooked up his own scheme for a tandem-engine fighter and quickly
got his team of gifted young hooligan-scientists to throw together a prototype, which surpassed
all expectations for such an odd creation.
Powered with two DB-601 engines, each delivering 1,160hp, the total horse-power being 2,320hp,
the craft, unloaded, could achieve 458mph at 25,000ft. The engines shared a large cooling radiator placed
beneath the forward fuselage.
It was armed with three MK 108 30mm auto-cannon, one mounted behind the forward engine and one for
each wing, housed in an external pod.
Of course, what really set this machine apart from almost everything else, was the inverted tail arrangement.
PAV incorporated the tail-wheel into the vertical stabilizer and gave the horizontal stabilizer a negative-lift wing-
foil that countered the nose-heaviness inherent in the design. The landing gear was of large and robust construction
and made landing an easy task, even on the roughest cow pastures.
The pilot enjoyed outstanding all-around visibility, but there was a complaint about the cramped cockpit filled with double
engine controls. The bubble canopy was hinged to open vertically and the aft propeller was explosively detached in case the
pilot had to bail.
The Furschlugginer, as it was affectionately titled, was able to fly on one engine and had a reputation for bringing its pilots home
even when battle-damaged.
